Chapter 13: Pawn

I groaned as something nudged my ribs roughly, wrenching out of my semi-conscious state. I didn't remember when, but I knew I'd collapsed onto the forest floor sometime after I left the eastern territory. I felt horrible, but I awakened nonetheless.

"Is she dead?" I heard a male voice speak above me, as my ribs were jostled again.

"She had better not be; her life is my insurance," another voice spat bitterly. Something took hold of my chin a moment later, yanking my face from the dirt. Why wouldn't they just kill me already? I opened my dreary eyes and clenched my teeth irritably.

"Ah, so nice to see you again, half-breed," Alpha Michael, I believe, stood over my frame with a wicked snarl plastered onto his cold face. I scowled and attempted to scoot away from him, but a few pairs of hands quickly clamped my body down against the ground.

A sickly feeling churned in my gut; something was very wrong.I blinked, hoping to examine my surroundings with a clearer view.

How long has it been? Where was I, exactly? As I grasped my foggy thoughts, I realized there was a group of about ten unfamiliar men surrounding me. My breath hitched; I knew I couldn't fight through them all at once, especially in my weakened condition.

"Where do you think you're going, little devil?" Michael sneered at me and knelt in front of my face. I cringed inwardly as he trailed his dirty, long fingernails against my cheek.

"Don't touch me!" I snapped harshly as I thrashed away from his touch. I could hardly move an inch because my entire body was covered in strong grips. Michael sighed and stood up, pulling his long black coat off his shoulders and tossing it to one of the men hovering above me.

"Claus, wrap her up and keep her constrained. We must get moving before the East travels anywhere near here. I want to be back on our lands by nightfall, so cover your damn tracks." Michael took one last, long look at me, before he turned and exploded into his massive black and grey wolf.

I felt my breath catch in my throat as I watched his terrifying wolf soar through the trees and disappear into the dark forest.

Before I could grasp what was happening, Claus, I suspected, threw the black coat over my entire body and scooped me up easily into his arms.

No. Freaking. Way.

I lashed out with every bit of my strength, despite my screaming shoulder.

"LET ME GO!" My screams were muffled in the fabric of the coat suffocating me, but I kept on with my relentless struggle.

"Shut her up, now!" I heard a man shout angrily and before I knew it, there was a grunt and then a stony fist connected with the back of my head.

Everett Tucker

"Everett it'll be okay, they'll find her and we'll get this all worked out soon." Luce placed her small hand on my shoulder as she whispered words of comfort. I sat on the steps of the mansion with my head in my hands, completely lost.

How could this have happened? Things have changed so quickly...

I felt ill with the thought of imagining Juliet broken and bloody, crumpled on the ground somewhere in the dead of night.

Why had she said those cruel things? Every time I played back our conversation, I didn't know if I wanted to throw up or break something.
