Y/N POV:

I want to get better.

That was my first thought I had when Ozpin let me apply for Beacon Academy. Yet, ever since I came here, my mind has been causing me much more pain compared to the times I was alone.

I'm not sure if this newfound source of pain is nothing but my own subconscious trying to make me relapse and give in to the pain within my soul. I don't want to listen to it, but it seems next to impossible not to agree with its statements.

I am useless. I am a failure. I am nothing but a waste of space that needs to disappear from this world.

Each of these remarks are from my own words as I only wish to embrace the eternal slumber known as death. However, I don't want to leave just yet...I wish to see if I can really change throughout my time at Beacon Academy.

Right now, despite my troubles, I find myself noticing that others seem to be experiencing different types of struggle. I saw how Weiss' pride nearly cost her the chance to see the worth of others, despite her high status as Heiress.

Another one of my friends that I've noticed has been struggling to advance is Jaune, who's currently facing off against Cardin Winchester for Professor Goodwitch's combat class.

3rd Person POV:

The sparring match has the two combatants standing on opposite ends of the stage. Cardin has his weapon: The Executioner perched on his shoulder while Jaune, who's left leaning on his weapon in exhaustion while the spotlight shines on both him and his opponent.

Cardin only chuckles at his opponent's exhaustion, which prompts Jaune to gather up his strength to charge forward and swing his blade at full force. The attack is completely evaded as Cardin swings his mace at Jaune, knocking him and his shield away from the force of the strike.

Now only armed with his sword, Jaune continues to try and attack, but is blocked by the mace's hilt. With both their weapons locked, Cardin forces himself up, towering over a struggling Jaune.

Cardin: This is the part where you lose.

Jaune: Over my dead-!

He's cut short as Cardin knees him in the gut, making Jaune drop his sword and fall to the ground in pain. Cardin then raises his mace and is about to slam it down on his downed opponent as the buzzer rings and the lights around them come back on.

Glynda: Cardin, that's enough! (he relents and walks away as she comes onto the stage, tapping her tablet) Students, as you can see, Mr. Arc's Aura has now dropped into the red. In a tournament-styled duel, this would indicate that Jaune is no longer fit for battle, and that the official may call the match.

Glynda: (while Jaune still lays on the floor in defeat while Pyrrha looks saddened at this result, Glynda turns her head to look at the losing warrior as he pulls out a smaller tablet with his low, blinking stats and that of his entire team) Mr. Arc, it's been weeks now. Please try to gauge your own Aura within your mind as using this method will help you decide when it's appropriate to attack, or when it is better to move to a more... defensive strategy. We wouldn't want you to be gobbled up by a Beowolf, now, would we?

Cardin: Speak for yourself...

Glynda: (to the seated and standing students, such as Ruby, Weiss, Yang, and Y/N, who all express their excitement in different ways) Remember, everyone, the Vytal Festival is only a few months away! It won't be long before students from the other kingdoms start arriving in Vale, so keep practicing! Those who choose to compete in the combat tournament will be representing all of Vale!
