Dinner went well after that and while Sam and our dads talked in the garage looking over the car they were restoring, our moms and I were in the living room as they laid out what has been taken care of so far for the wedding. It was decided that since I had Sunday off that we would go find my dress in the afternoon after lunch. I called Marissa to tell her so she could come too. I was hoping she would be my maid of honor, since Becky moved away and got married in high school. Plus Marissa is my best friend and has been for years. I emailed Sabs to let her know because she was going to be beyond thrilled to know I am finally getting married and having a baby. She's been trying for years to fix me up with anyone she could since college, even though I hated blind dates.
Later that evening when you are both alone, Sam finally told me why they had to leave so suddenly so many years ago and how he wished they had let him stay in contact with me.
Sam: So, you remember that dad was a preacher, right?
Mimi: Of course, what happened?
Sam: Well, it seems that one of the ladies from church wanted to get in his pants and told mom that they were having an affair.
Mimi: No way, tell me your mom didn't believe such lies.
Sam: Of course not. She told the lady that she would have to leave the church for spreading such lies in front of everyone. Unfortunately, even though the lies where proven to be lies, well you know how uppity church deacons can be, so they asked Dad to leave. Since the house was owned by the church they gave us 48 hours to pack up and get out. We had to go stay with my mom's family for bit until dad could get another preaching job.
Mimi: Those self-righteous, sanctimonious, two faced cretins. What right do they have to kick your dad out for doing nothing wrong? I hope they found out Karma is a bitch.
Sam: Oh, I made sure they did. I took over most of their companies as soon as I was able and made sure they knew why I was doing the hostile takeovers. They were still jerk-offs about what they did to dad, so I may have ruined their families' chances and took their companies over too.
Mimi: Well done, good husband. I would have done the same to them as well, but where did you get the capital to do all this wheeling and dealing?
Sam: It turns out my mom's parents were loaded and grandpa took me under his wing. I actually lived with him and grandpa until I graduated high school, because they all thought it would be better for me to have a stable address. Mom and dad decided to go to the mission field and because I had already started 5th grade they didn't want to uproot me again so quickly. So, my grandpa offered to let me stay, but he refused to let me make contact with anyone from our neighborhood since he felt they were responsible for dad's situation. He started teaching me the family business after I finished 6th grade. By that I mean from the ground up, during summer break I was working in the mail room. Once I learned that aspect I was moved to shadow HR the summer after 7th grade, and worked as an assistant to one of the lower level executives after 8th. Then grandpa got serious since I was starting High School, every summer break I was expected to shadow him as the CEO and learn everything he does. I still had to keep straight A's in school, but after my homework was done I had to handle business emails for him in the evenings and weekends. When I graduated, he was so proud and set me in college to get my BA in business management, due to the fact to run his company I had to have a college degree. He worked it out for me to get an accelerated degree so for the next year all I did was study, and somehow I got a 4 year degree in just 1.
Mimi: Sam, that's wonderful, I always knew you were so smart. Will your grandparents be coming to the wedding?
Sam: Sadly, no. Grandma died when I was 16 after being hit by a drunk driver and grandpa was never the same. He made sure I was CEO of his company and then he gave up, the doctors say he died of a broken heart. I was named as his sole beneficiary in his will because he said he knew I would take care of my mother for as long as she had left on this planet.
