"Did you hear? Block was able to get out of the scrap towns by learning that wizardy stuff!" Lilian punched the air excitedly. Y/n just nodded quietly in response. She didn't feel like celebrating with the rest of the village. They were blinded by a fantasy of leaving the poor town. Couldn't they see that they were rooted to this place like the gnarly trees that grew around the houses. No matter how sharp of a weapon, they couldn't be cut down. The scrappers born here would die here too.
Block had just gotten enough money to leave by caravan. His parents had been richer than most, which helped him a lot.
Lilian poked Y/n teasingly. "Why the long face you baby? Sad that you're still stuck with me?"
Y/n cracked a small smile at her cousin. "Not at all. It's just... my parents..."
Her parents had died decaphoebs ago from a disease that had swept through the land. It had most likely come from the traders that came every so often to buy the junk the scrappers had scavenged for. Now, all she had was Lilian, her cousin who's parents were always away, searching for work. Y/n didn't know what she'd do without her spunky cousin, but she still missed her mother and father. She subconsciously clutched the diamond heart necklace that she always wore. It was a parting gift, a memory of the last few moments spent with her family, and not to mention the most valuable thing she owned. How they'd gotten their hands on it, Y/n could only imagine, but it couldn't have been easy. So she kept it with her at all times.
"I know how much they wanted to get you out of this dump, Y/n. But hey, maybe you can still leave."
"No." Y/n shook her head dejectedly. "I can't leave. I barely make enough coin for food. How do you expect me to get a caravan?"
"You'll find a way." Lilian rummaged through a small sack next to her. Pulling out two small cakes, she tossed one to Y/n. Her eyes lit up at the sight of the delicious pastry. "Whoa! How did you afford these?!"
"I have my ways." Lilian smirked, then took a bite out of the cake. "I thought you'd need some cheering up sometimes soon and I'm always prepared."
It was true, Y/n's cousin seemed to have a solution to everything... well, until that one day when an unexpected visitor showed up. The same day Y/n's dreams came true, but not in the way she had hoped.
Yes, I know. This is extremely short, but it's only the prologue and I promise the next chapters will be longer.
