"this is the trigger. i assume you know what this does." mark fiddled with the gun as he glanced up at donghyuck.

the boy nodded, not looking at mark but only the gun. he seemed so out of it, mark thought. his eyes had a sad, shook look in them.

it kind of hurt.

"donghyuck." mark snapped his fingers as he took the gentler approach. "if you wanna fire a gun you need to pay attention, yeah?"

donghyuck nodded, head down and eyes downcast. "sorry sir," he mumbled. god, even his voice sounded strained.

"you grip the gun like this," mark told him, showing him how his fingers perfectly wrapped around the handle. and you point," mark pointed it at a target at the other end of the room, "like this. when you aim there's rear sight, but when we're in a rush and pressured we got to fire quickly." mark shot the gun.

donghyuck visibly flinched at the sound. he's heard the sound of guns so many times in his life. they'd never really traumatized him, but then his mother was shot. the sound of a gun killing someone dear to you sounds so different than any other shot. it rings through your head forever.

"here, it's loaded and everything. just did what i did," mark told donghyuck as he handed him the gun. donghyuck fumbled it and nearly dropped the killing device. mark quickly put his hands under donghyuck's, his palms touching the back of the boy's hands. "be careful, you know what could happen if you drop that."

donghyuck nodded and took the gun in his hand, pointing it towards the target. mark came up just behind him, adjusting donghyuck's hand position, chest pressed against his back. mark let go of donghyuck's hands but rested his hands against the boy's sides, trying to reassure him. "be careful. first shot's always the scariest." mark didn't move his hands or from his place behind donghyuck.

donghyuck took a deep breath and pointed the gun at the target. he narrowed his eyes but the all he could see was his mother... his mother was right in front of him.

she stood in place of the target, looking at him with the most motherly look. donghyuck could hear the sounds of the men barging into their home... the men that had killed her.

and here he was, about to kill her the same way. he was going to fucking take her life this time... he was one of the men now. oh god, he couldn't do this-

"no..." he whispered. "no!" he said louder.

tears flooded donghyuck's eyes and he suddenly chucked the gun away. "no no no!" he screamed, running toward his mother... he could still see her... the men were going to kill her, he was going to kill her-

suddenly, he was pulled back but he still saw her... donghyuck's mother. "no! fuck no! just let me go and-"

she disappeared.

donghyuck was snapped back to the present, only hearing the sound of his and mark's heavy breathing. suddenly, he couldn't help it as he broke down, feeling his legs give out from under his body.

mark's arms gently lowered the boy to the ground, mark sinking alongside donghyuck. poor donghyuck looked like a mess, eyes puffy and bloodshot and tears streaming down his face as he sobbed.

mark hesitantly wrapped his arms around donghyuck, not knowing what to do. donghyuck felt so cold, he felt so fragile. and then donghyuck looked up at mark, the saddest, most defeated look in his eyes and his bottom lip trembling helplessly.

mark's heart broke.

he wrapped his arms around the boy and brought donghyuck to his lap, rocking the both of them back and forth. mark didn't know what to say so he just kept silent, donghyuck's face hidden under his chin.

"no..." breathed donghyuck. "i'm... i'm sorry."

mark felt his vision clouding up because godamnit, his heart hurt so much for donghyuck.

mark brought up donghyuck's face so he could make eye contact with the younger. he studied his eyes.

"your eyes have always had this sad look in them..."

"i know," whispered donghyuck, eyes shining with tears.

"just like that," mark breathed as he wiped away the tears. "i shouldn't have- i'm so dumb for letting you... i shouldn't waited, i'm-"

"my mom was shot when i was 19," donghyuck blurted out. "that's how i got on the streets."

mark was silent as donghyuck continued.

"it was- it was by a mafia," donghyuck choked out. "she tried to protect me but they just shot her..."

mark stayed silent as donghyuck sniffled. he took a breath and decided to say something.

"that gunshot is always different, the one that takes away the one you love."

donghyuck nodded weakly. "that's- yeah."

"i hate watching people get killed. but the innocent... they hurt the most," mark sighed as he rubbed donghyuck's back.

"hyung..."

"hmm?"

"... you're so right."

"donghyuck looked trashed," johnny told mark as he walked into his office, plopping down on his chair as he stared off into space. "so do you, y'know."

mark shrugged. "sure..." he mumbled distantly.

johnny looked confused. "should i ask what happened?"

"nothing happened, suh."

"did donghyuck nearly kill you? or maybe he's just so good with a gun he can-"

"shut. up," mark growled because johnny was just pissing him off. "donghyuck didn't shoot a gun today."

"what? but i thought you were planning to-"

"i was. he didn't shoot a gun."

johnny leaned forward. "why?"

mark avoided his eyes. "confidential."

"c'mon mark! i'm practically your right hand man, you can-"

"you're dismissed," was all mark said.

"seriously, mark? you tell me everything! what's so special about donghyuck that-"

"what's so special about donghyuck? what's so special about donghyuck?" mark stood up from his seat and gave johnny a threatening look. "dismissed."

johnny turned his back and stormed away. "you never answered my question," he said over his shoulder.

"fine!" mark stood by his doorway, shoving johnny. even though he was way shorter than johnny he looked more intimidating than ever. "everything's special about lee donghyuck."
