I cheered loudly as I watched my best friends tumble, flip, dance, smile and sing together, making sure not to leave a single one of their talents out, and wowing the other girls with their shining confidence and self assurance.Something I wish I had.
They had been practicing their audition for the cheer squad all summer, so without a doubt they executed their performance perfectly, not a single move in the routine ignored or done lazily.
I held two thumbs up high and smiled widely after seeing the judges' pleased faces as they clapped and scribbled down a few notes. Jennie and Jisoo held hands and did a polite bow and before thanking them and walking off of the 'stage' (which was actually the school's football field), running towards the bleachers where I was seated.
Being engulfed in a hug by these two was the greatest feeling in the world, they really knew how to give the best hugs after a long day. "That was amazing." I beamed at them, a light blush tinting their faces. "We weren't that good.." Jisoo said shyly as she let her tight ponytail loose. "Speak for yourself, I know I did good." Jennie playfully flipped her ruffled hair before strolling down the bleacher stairs and making her way to the back exit of the school, Jisoo and I doing our best to keep up with her. Jisoo struggling a bit more because of her short legs.
"I really wish you would've done it with us though. It would've been a fun experience for all of us... it's our last year here after all." I shook my head at the thought, recollecting the memories from two years ago.
"There's no way." I waved her off.
Jisoo shot a confused look my way. "But you used to always daydream about being a cheerleader, what happened?"
"Please... Lisa, I just want to get to school, I'll do anything.." I pleaded as I rested my forehead against the cold pavement, in front of her expensive shoes. Below her like some peasant.
I could feel my heart beating out of my chest, preparing for a kick to the head, or to the gut if I'm lucky.
But there was nothing.
Nothing but the quiet humming of some unknown song leaving her lips. "Look up." I heard her command, it came off softer than usual, but I was one to know not to trust the soft voice. I shook my head against the ground. Not wanting to receive a much expected surprise to the face.
Without warning, she yanked my head upwards by my hair as she knelt to meet my eyes. My ribbon becoming undone as I tried my best to keep my face composed. "When I tell you to do something... you do it." She continued to pierce her strong gaze into my soul. I swallowed hard, a few moments passed before she stood.
She stepped back. It almost seemed like she was waiting for me to say something, to do something.
So I tried.
"Please—" It came out nothing but a whisper.
In no time, her foot met my face with so much force, I fell backwards and the back of my head hit the ground behind me. I was dizzy for a few seconds, and couldn't even lift my head without it pounding. And so I laid there. I laid there and she continued to kick.
My stomach,
My back,
My ribs.
Until what felt like every part of me was discolored in dark circles and smudges.
She even stepped on my hands until she heard a few knuckles crack.
