A few days later, I'm called into Ornella's office. Nervously, I make my way down the stairs and into her office. I knock on the door, waiting for a response.
"Come on in!" She chirps. I do so, sitting on the chair across from her desk. I nervously chew on the sleeve of my hoodie.
"So, Mr. Hood has made a decision. But, there's good news and bad news." I was expecting her to ask which I wanted first, but she just jumped in.
"Good news, he wants to foster you." My eyes light up as I look up at her. "Bad news, he still has a couple weeks before he can get approved." She tells me.
"I'm glad you're nice, or else I'd be really upset that I have to stay here for any longer." I laugh quietly. "I just want to get out of here, because of Lily."
And James.
"But I've dealt with her since she got here. I'm sure I can handle a couple more weeks." I smile.
"She's still giving you trouble?" She asks. I nod, looking down at the floor. She sighs heavily. "She's fifteen. She should be mature enough now. She's been here for six years and has been giving you trouble ever since." She states what I already know.
"She probably just feels bad about how long she's been here. I mean, I get it... I've been here for 12 years." It's silent for a few minutes.
"Well, I'm going outside to skate. I'll be in to help with dinner in..." I look at the clock on the wall. "About 30 minutes?"
Ornella nods, allowing me to leave.
________
It's been two weeks. Ornella told me that Calum got approved for foster care two days ago. He's coming to pick me up today. I'm super scared because he says he has 3 best friends who are always at his house.
What if they don't like me?
Would he send me back?
A ring on the doorbell pulls me out of my thoughts. My eyes widen and I nervously make my way to the door, but I'm stopped by James. My breath becomes raggedy as he backs me up against the wall.
"Where are you going, slut?" He sneers, his body pressing against mine. I work up the courage to push him off of me. He tries to grab me, and hurt me, but I run to the door, opening it for my new "foster dad." James rolls his eyes and walks back upstairs.
He offers me a huge smile and pulls me into a hug. I freeze for a few seconds before finally hugging back.
"I'm so excited to bring you home. You ready?" He asks, pulling away. I smile softly and nod, looking down at the ground. "Great!" He smiles. "I just need to sign one more thing."
I step aside and he walks towards Ornella's office, where she is already waiting for him, paper and pen in hand. They exchange a few words and then he takes the pen and paper from her and places it on the nearest table. He quickly signs it a few times and gives it back to her.
He starts walking back to me when I quickly run past him, shocking him from the sudden movement. I crush Ornella in a bear hug and don't let go.
"I'm gonna miss you a lot." I sniffle. She lets out a small 'aww' before squeezing me one last time before letting go. I walk back over to where my bags are, picking them up and following Calum out to his car.
"Are you excited to meet my mates?" He asks, driving off. I look at him like he's crazy.
"Ornella told you about my social anxiety, right?" I ask quietly, playing with my sleeves. He nods.
"Yes, she did. But there's nothing to be anxious about. They're good guys. A little loud, but good." He tells me.
Like that helps.
Soon enough, we pull into a driveway of a medium sized house. Calum hops out and grabs my bags for me. I follow him to the door as he unlocks it. We walk in and hear yelling coming from somewhere in the house.
Why are they already here?
I chew on my sleeve nervously as Calum places my bags by the door and beckons me to follow him, which I do. My body tenses every step I take, the yelling getting louder. He tells me to stay behind a wall while he walks into the living room.
"Luke, don't hit me, that's cheating!" I hear a voice yell. They bicker back and forth for a few more seconds before Calum yells louder than both of them.
"Guys! Will you shut up for one second?" Suddenly the room goes quiet. "Pause the game." He tells them. They groan, and I assume they do what he asked.
"Why'd you make us pause it?" One of them groans. Just then, the front door opens and in comes a guy with dyed red hair. He walks past me and into the living room.
"Who's she?" He asks Calum, as if I'm not even there. I'm not complaining, though. Less talking and interacting with people.
"Who?" The two other voices ask in sync.
"Dammit, Ash. You just ruined my surprise!" Calum whines. He walks out of the living room and grabs my small hand in his large one, making me flinch. He pulls me into the room with three very confused men.
"Luke, Michael, Ashton. Meet Emily. My foster daughter."
