Get Out

After another questioning by the police, Calum and I sat silently on the living room as a police car is parked outside.

I'm causing so many problems for everyone. Everyone was fine before I arrived.

"No, Em, don't think like that. You're not causing problems." He says encouragingly.

I said that out loud?

Though he says I'm not causing problems, the stressed look on his face says otherwise.

I go to stand up and go to my room, when my phone buzzes multiple times. I take in a sharp breath when the contact name pops up on my screen.

"C-Calum..." I stutter, panic running through my veins. He looks up from his phone curiously, his eyebrows pulled together and a frown settled on his face. I hand him my phone and he sighs, running his hand over his face.

"I'm so sorry." I whisper, tears threatening to make an appearance. "I-I'm just ruining everything." I break down, sitting criss-crossed on the floor. Calum sits down beside me and pulls me into his arms.

"Emily, no. This is not your fault. How much do you want to bet it's just some crazy ass fan? You're okay. I'm okay. No one's hurt, and it's going to stay that way. No one is to blame but the person watching us. Do you understand me?" I sit up and wipe my tears with the sleeve of the black 5sos hoodie Cal gave me a week ago.

"I think I'm gonna go to bed." I sigh, rubbing my red, puffy eyes. He nods, a small smile placing itself on his lips.

"Why don't you spend the night in my room? Just so I know you're safe." He suggests. I shrug, agreeing. "I'll be there in a bit."

I walk up to his room, not bothering to brush my teeth and slip under his covers, quickly falling asleep.

It feels like only a few minutes, but really it's been two hours since I fell asleep. The door cracks open and I turn around, seeing a tall figure with a knife in his hand. I let out a loud scream as the bedside lamp turns on and there stands Calum, shushing me frantically.

He places the knife on the table and puts his hands up in surrender.

"It's just me." He whispers. I look at him with confusion and horror.

"Why the fuck do you have a knife?" I whisper back.

"Protection." He whispers, lifting up the covers and slipping in.

"Why are we whispering?" I ask.

"I don't know." He chuckles.

"Don't worry, I'll take care of her." Marissa's hushed voice filters into the room as I open my eyes. I look for Calum beside me, only to be greeted with an empty bed. The front door opens and closes and I slightly start to panic.

Did Calum leave me?

I can't tell which one is worse: Being left alone completely in the middle of this situation, or being left alone with Marissa.

I don't know if she's even here, but I'm not sure if I want to find out.

I stand up and stuff my phone in my pocket. I slowly and quietly make my way downstairs. I look around, not seeing anyone, realizing I'm alone. I grab my airpods from the kitchen counter and go to put them in, when a voice makes me jump.

"Put your shoes on, we're going somewhere." I turn around, heart thumping as I stare at Marissa.

"Shit, you scared me. I thought I was alone." I chuckle lightly, eyebrows strewing together. "What do you mean we're going somewhere?"

"Calum asked me to take you somewhere. Told me not to tell you." She explains. I nod and put my shoes on, feeling uneasy. This doesn't feel right.

As soon as I stand up, Marissa starts pulling me to the car.

"Wait, how do I know you're not lying?" I ask suspiciously.

"Just get in the damn car." She rolls her eyes. Hesitantly, I do so.

30 minutes later, I start panicking as I see familiar roads I never wanted to see again. Soon, the cursed building comes into sight.

   Yotega's Home For Orphaned Children.

"No. Stop the car." I nearly scream.

"It's what's best for everyone, Emily! Calum doesn't want someone who ruins everything she touches!" She shouts back, pulling up the the curb. "I told you to get out of Calum's life. You didn't comply, so I'm taking things into my own hands."

   She's behind the messages?

"Take me home." My voice cracks.

"Calum told me to take you here. This is your home now. Get out." She says monotonously.

   "Please—"

"Get. Out!" She shouts. Tears stream down my face as I get out, walking to the sidewalk and watching her drive away. Slowly, I turn around and ring the doorbell.

"Ornella Yotega speaking, how can I help you?" Ornella's voice filters through the intercom.

"Nel'." I sob out, a small gasp coming through the speaker as the door unlocks and gets thrown open. I immediately get engulfed in her arms as I fail to contain my sobs.

"I don't understand... Calum filed for adoption 2 days ago." She strokes my hair.

"I-I guess he changed his mind." I whisper, pulling back. "They always do." I storm passed her and roughly pull my phone out of my hoodie pocket.

A simple "I trusted you" text to Calum later, I storm up to my room, which Ornella told me is still empty, besides Lily.

I sink down to the floor, sobs wracking my body as I ignore all of the incoming calls, probably from Calum.

"Emily? What's wrong?" Calum asks through the phone as I pick up his 20th call.

"What the fuck do you mean 'what's wrong?'" I sob, throat and chest aching. "You're just like the rest of them."

"Emily, calm down and tell me what I did."

"Seriously? Calum, you dumped me back at the orphanage. And even worse, you had Marissa do it. You didn't even have the balls to turn me back in yourself." I rant, breath running low as I attempt to stop my cries..

"What!?" He shouts. "That bitch. Emily, listen to me. I didn't tell her to drop you off. She went behind my back. Fuck! I should've broken up with her when she first told me to get rid of you." He says, panic in his voice.

"She told you to get rid of me and you didn't find that alarming?" I ask sarcastically.

"Emily, I-I'm so sorry. I'm on my way right now."

"She's the stalker." I whisper.

"What? How do you know?"

"She told me. She said something like 'I warned you to stay out of Calum's life' or something." I explain, wiping away the last of my tears.

"Well, you won't have to see her again. I promise."
