chapter six

"everyone, students, gather your things and be on your way. class is dismissed for today." miss.stacy announced as everyone tried to help the situation, gathered around billy. gilbert, diana, and prissy were right at his side helping the most. lucy noticed how gilbert's potential doctor skills showed.

gilbert and lucy spent the rest of the day at home, attempting to work on the fence. they struggled but tried their best. gilbert dropped the wood and panted. he was frustrated. he looked at lucy and sighed. they went inside.

out of frustration, gilbert had left lucy at home. he went to his father's grave. lucy stayed in her room. she layed on her bed. all she could think about was how much she missed her mother. she missed the way she would brush her hair, the way she would sing to her at night, the way she always showed love and support. a tear fell from her eye but she smiled as she thought about how she gave her the opportunity to escape and meet people as great as bash, gilbert, and anne. then she thought about billy. she learned his name through context clues from others who would talk to him, and of course the incident that happened earlier. she had hoped that she would be able to talk to him. of course in her mind she realized that was probably impossible and silly. she'd never get the opportunity to talk to him in public. also he'd probably try not to be involved with her at all, but she wanted a real conversation. not him saying she's strange and forcing her to put on a scared composure. she wasn't quite sure why she thought about him so much, they barely even knew each other.

"lucy, lucy." gilbert shook her as she started waking up.

"gilbert?" she sat up and rubbed her eyes.

"come on, let's go catch a train." he said as she got up. "i'll explain everything on the way." she nodded at him and situated herself, following him downstairs.

getting lucy on the train wasn't easy, but with some extra money and negotiation, they found themselves settled in a seat. gilbert looked out the window and saw something strange. he opened it and lucy looked over.

"what is it?" she asked. they saw anne, diana, ruby, cole, and moody hopping the train.
"what are they doing?" lucy questioned and gilbert shrugged.

once they got off the train, they found the car the group had gone on and stood waiting for it to open. gilbert smiled as anne opened the door and they looked at him and lucy in shock.

"what are you doing here?" anne asked.

"i figure i should ask you the same question." gilbert replied. lucy smiled awkwardly.

gilbert and anne talked as lucy and diana followed behind with the group.

"it's really nice meeting you, lucy. i hope i'll be seeing you more, at school maybe?" diana smiled.

"i hope so too. gilbert told me about what happened with miss.stacey, i hope she comes back. i don't think i'll be able to go without her as the teacher." lucy replied. diana stopped and looked at her.

"don't worry, we'll make sure she gets her job back." lucy smiled at diana and they hugged eachother. lucy walked back to gilbert as they left.

the two made their way to the slum.

"are we here to find bash?" lucy asked with a smile.

"yes." gilbert knocked on mary's door. she opened it and they smiled.

"gilbert, lucy? have you seen bash?" she asked.

"i was hoping he was here." gilbert replied.

"he was but..." she looked down and shook her head in distress. "come in, sit down." she let the two through the door and they sat down with some tea. mary explained what happened.
