chapter nine

"lucy! we'll be late!" gilbert called out to the girl who was still up stairs.

"sorry!" she said as she ran down the stairs. she grabbed a quick meal and followed gilbert to the door, passing bash and mary as they said their goodbyes.

the two chatted as they made their way to the school house. once they arrived they were greeted by ms.stacy and anne.

"anne? i didn't expect to see you here early." gilbert said.

"i had a few questions for ms.stacy. i want to start a newspaper for avonlea and thought we could run it." she smiled.

"that's a great idea." gilbert smiled back. lucy looked at the two and shook her head. it was so obvious they liked eachother but neither of them acknowledged it.
soon after, gilbert and lucy got to work as anne and ms.stacy continued their conversation.

the other students started to arrive just as lucy finished her new book.

"lucy! come here!" diana called for her. lucy smiled and walked to diana, anne, and ruby.

it was finally lunchtime and lucy was on her way with anne to get their milk from the stream. as they made their way back, they ran into the boys.

"hi lucy." billy smiled.

"hi billy." lucy smiled back. she was so glad he was comfortable talking to her at school. meanwhile a very upset josie overheard and was on her way to them.

"oh, lucy!" she stood in the way of lucy and billy.

"hi josie." lucy's smiled vanished.

"i just wanted to say i don't think you should sit with us at lunch anymore."

"why not?" lucy frowned.

"my mother suggested it and honestly i agree with her. it's not a good look and we don't get along anyway." she smiled.

"josie can you leave her alone." billy said making her turn around to him.

"this is low even for you josie pye." anne said but she ignored her.

"why are you even talking to her billy? have you forgotten about me?" josie sassed.

"a conversation with her is more interesting than the boring drama you go on and on about. she never did anything to you so back off." he crossed his arms. josie scoffed.

"you're normally on my side." she said.

"not anymore." he went around josie to lucy and took her milk to grab her free hand and walked off with her to their spot, leaving a very mad josie pye and confused anne. anne had noticed billy being more soft in a way but did lucy have something to do with it? if anything it was a good thing but she still wondered.

"woah, billy, slow down." lucy said. he stopped and turned to her.

"i'm so sorry she acted that way. it makes me so mad." he huffed. lucy smiled.

"thank you for standing up for me. i'm used to it by now."

billy looked at her with an apologetic smile.

"i need to tell you something." he said and she nodded. "soon i'm going to be helping out my father with his business so i won't be able to go to school for the year." he sighed and studied lucy's face to try and assume what she was thinking. she sighed and faked a smile.

"that's really good for you. it's for experience, right?" she replied and he nodded.

"but i'll always make an excuse to come see you here at the same time." he said.

"you don't have to if-"

"no. i want to." lucy smiled and this time it was real. she hugged him and he hugged back. they savored the moment and squeezed eachother before they finally let go. billy took her hand and kissed it. lucy smiled and kissed his cheek.

"what is going on here?" the two turned in shock to the new third voice.

"gilbert! oh my goodness." lucy said in a panic. billy quickly let go of her hand and they stepped apart from eachother.

"i was just looking for you, lucy, and everyone said you came this way." he was smiling.

"well uh.." lucy was speechless.

"it seems like you really need her so why don't you just go along, lucy?" billy smiled nervously.

"yes let's go." she walked past gilbert going back, and the two boys shared a look before gilbert followed her.
