"Hey." Sam said as Damian violently shoved his backpack in his gym locker and grabbed his clothes. Christmas Break was over. The Kent family had Christmas at the Wayne Manor. It was chaotic and great. Damian got Jon a gaming system that he had been wanting. Damian found his Christmas wish list in Jon's room. Damian took a picture of it.
They spent Christmas day playing video games and drinking hot chocolate. Dick kept singing "All I Want For Christmas is You." By Mariah Carey until Jason punched him in the stomach. Tim got a ton of books and sat by the fire to read.
Now it was back to school and gym class was about to begin. After running the pacer in a sweater, Damian prayed that today's sport didn't require much running. Damian looked over where Sam was sitting on a bench.
"Hey." Damian returned. He pointed with his thumb over his shoulder. "I'm going to go change."
"In the bathroom?" Sam asked.
"Yeah." Damian returned.
Sam shrugged and Damian brought his clothes to the bathroom. The stalls were full and so he had to wait. The locker room emptied out.
The class was working on a floor hockey unit. When Damian emerged, the class was sitting in the bleachers listening to their coach explaining the rules. He looked at Damian.
"You're late."
Damian spoke. "I was changing in the bathroom."
"You can change in the lockers."
Damian frowned. He could think of 7 different ways he could incapacitate his coach. "Yes, sir."
He went and took his seat on the bottom bench, next to Sam.
Soon everyone was on their feet, rushing to get the best hockey stick. Damian looked at Sam. "Are you playing?"
Sam shrugged. "I'll try. As long as I don't run or get knocked over, I should be fine."
"I'll protect you." Damian decided. He handed a stick to Sam- a left handed stick (Sam was left handed) He took one for himself.
"Captains." Coach announced. "Who wants to be a captain."
Parker leaned on his stick. "I'll be captain."
"Okay. Another."
Tony spoke out. "Damian wants to be a captain, too."
Damian would have objected but he want to make sure that Sam was protected. "Fine. I'll be captain."
Parker and Damian stood in front of the bleachers. Parker chose first.
"Tony."
Tony smirked and got up. He fist bumped Parker and Damian rolled his eyes. He looked at everyone and then locked eyes with Sam.
Damian smirked. "Sam."
Everyone muttered and Sam looked around him before getting up and joining Damian.
They broke down into two teams and their coach refreshed them on the rules. Damian's team's goalie was a girl, who promised that she wouldn't let the other team score. She was a goalie on the school's soccer team. It couldn't be that much different- she insisted, pulling the mask down over her face. Damian shrugged. He didn't really care. He just want to watch Sam.
Damian came to the center line against Parker, lining his hockey stick on the other side of the puck for the face-off. In the smallest skip of a second, Damian stole the puck away and passed it over to a girl on his team. She was a good sprinter but he figured she would get tired and ultimately become worthless. Damian remembered the fact that Tim can run faster than him and sighed to himself as he watched the girl take a slap-shot at the goal and score. His team cheered.
When the puck slid past Damian, he turned around and saw Tony take the puck and take a shot. Sam was playing defense. Tony took a shot but true to her word, the girl blocked it. He groaned. Sam laughed and that was when it happened.
Damian was running down the court. It seemed to happen in slow motion: Tony body-checked Sam, knocking him down. Time moved normally again and Damian felt his blood boiling. He stepped in front of Sam and shoved Tony- hard.
Parker came over and sneered. "Damian, I think that's an illegal move."
Of course that was when their coach was suddenly looking. Tony smirked and then looked at the coach.
"Ah- my arm. It really hurts! Damian shoved me."
"Mr. Wayne." Their coach said, menacingly, walking towards him. Damian was helping Sam up. "Penalty box. 2 minutes."
"He shoved Sam. Body checked him- Tony had that coming." He looked at Sam. "Let's go sit down."
"No." Their coach said. He looked at Parker. "Take Sam to the bleachers and then return his stick."
"Of course, coach." Parker said before turning around. "I'll help you." He said with a sickening smile on his face. Damian still felt his blood boil- not only was he angry, he felt like he was boiling, too. He couldn't take wearing a sweater any longer. Parker came back and handed Sam's hockey stick to the coach.
Damian had to take a 2 minute penalty. He sat down next to Sam and talked while he waited for the 2 minutes to end.
"Sam, I'm going to take off my sweater and I don't want you to freak out."
"Why would I freak out?" He asked as Damian pulled it over his head.
Scars- slices and stitch marks, all up and down his arms. He got up without saying a word and went back down to the court. As he played against the others, people didn't seem to notice but eventually Damian's goalie called a time-out and walked up to his coach. She whispered something to him and their coach looked over to Damian.
"Class dismissed." He announced. "Go to the lockers."
The class put away their stick and made their way to the locker room.
"Mr. Wayne." Their coach said. Damian was sitting with Sam. "I need to have a word with you."
"Shit." Damian muttered, pulling his sweater back on.
"Now."
