Something Worth Fighting For

Nothing has felt the same since I returned home.

It wasn't long before I got back into my usual routine of school, training, homework, repeat. But while I was away, I realized I'm not the only one who's in danger.

Everyone around me is at risk.

As much as I loved staying with Peter and May, I also deeply missed my dad. It made me realize that I have people who are really precious to me, and no matter what happens I need to be ready to protect them from Hydra.

Once I accepted that, I began advancing quickly in my training.

So far we've only worked on manipulating water, but it's made me realize just how powerful water alone can be. Yeah it's cool watching the water float in the air where it shouldn't be, but if I'm precice I can use it to cleanly cut through almost anything.

When Christmas break came, I got into a regular routine of getting up early, going for my usual morning run, combat training, then ability training with Elizabeth. Most days, I don't finish all of that until nearly 4pm. It's been exhausting, but even though every inch of me is sore I can feel myself getting stronger every day.

After my 4th day of intense training, I took a shower and put on a comfortable pair of pajamas. Once I was all clean, I laid on my bed happily with a book. But before I even had a chance to finish the first sentence, my phone began vibrating next to me.

A few weeks ago Sarah stole my phone and took 478 selfies, so I found the least flattering one and made it her contact picture. At the sight of her face on my screen with bulging eyes and nostrils flared, I laughed quietly to myself then answered it.

"Hello?"

"ALICE!! Are you free tonight?!" Sarah squealed, making me yank my phone away from my ear to protect my hearing. When the screaming stopped, I hesitantly held it to my ear once again.

"Maybe?" I glanced down at my pajamas pants, and my tee shirt slowly being soaked by my wet hair.

"I asked Justin on a date!" She squealed once again, but to my relief this time it was only about half the volume.

Every guy that Sarah's ever liked since 7th grade flashed through my mind like pages of a book as I tried to remember which one was Justin.

Sarah's pretty popular at our school, but not for the same reason I am. She's popular because she has a fun personality and it's easy for her to make friends, not because she's the daughter of a billionaire who can and will rearrange the spine of any kid who messes with her.

But because Sarah has so many friends, she also has a lot of boyfriend options and at times, she could be considered boy crazy.

"That's amazing, I'm so happy for you!" I told her enthusiastically, giving up on trying to remember which one Justin is. "But, what does this have to do with me?" I asked, confused since she asked if I was free tonight.

"I want you to come with us!"

For a brief moment, my heart stopped.

I don't want to third wheel on her date!

"Sarah, I don't think I should. It's a date, it's supposed to be only you and Justin." I pointed out, silently wondering if she actually thought it was acceptable to bring another friend on a date.

"No, not like that." She quickly brushed off, bringing me relief. "I want you to ask Peter go go with you, it could be a double date!"

At the suggestion, my heart lurched and I began to wonder how much more my heart could take from this conversation.
