Let's get this clear....a spell and hex are two totally different things.
Hexes are usually cast with preparation beforehand. I know when I cast a hex, I prepare for them a few weeks in advance, because I want my intention to be clear, I want to have all of my supplies and tools ready and at my altar, and make sure my space is cleansed and there's a full, dark or new moon. I know I do not cast hexes out of love and light, and most of them are to reflect a persons actions that they inflicted onto me back onto them. Now, a lot of people confuse a hex with a curse. Curses that I have read about and ones that other witches have performed usually last a very very long time. Maybe it'll be passed to the person and then their children and their children's children.
I tend to get very irritated when other people that I talk to about my magicks, think that a hex I'm going to cast is a hex, and usually, this will be baby witches or Wiccans/pagans that will look down on hexes, and curses. Baby witches because everyone tells baby witches not to mess around with hexing. LOOK YOU CAN! If you are interested in working with hoodoo, hoodoo has no karma, so if that's what you are afraid of, I guarantee you, there is nothing to be afraid of. I have nothing against Wiccans, Pagans and baby witches, I was a baby witch and I did identify as Wiccan until I realized how to use my power and to give people a taste of their own medicine, I left the Wiccan religion, and doing everything out of love and light, and started working through all energies to get what needs to be done...done!
Spells, on the other hand, are very fun to create on your own. Your spells could be a whole paragraph or a few sentences to maybe even 3 words. You can convert your spells to sigils, by writing your spell out, canceling all the vowels out, and repeating letter, then writing the remaining letter all ontop of each other. This is good for witches that are either still in the "broom closet" and for those witches that are in school. Leave your mark wherever you walk and draw your sigils on the bottom of your shoes. If you plan on visiting a graveyard or cemetery..make sure you have a small bag of coins to leave for the gatekeeper, salt, and as much protection as you can get. Sigils are good to have on the bottom of your shoes then.
You do not have to cast an entire circle if you are just doing a small spell. I usually don't call upon all my elements and spirit guides until I'm cursing or doing a big spell where I need the most help. If you are just doing a small charm, as in you're blessing your tools and supplies, or your aminals color. You can create that sacred space that we all love to be connected to, and just simply light a candle to draw your spirit guides, take a little bit of salt in your hard to make a small circle around yourself for some kind of protection and close your eyes. Breathe your energy into your charms, bless them, make them yours, consecrate them, make them sacred.
