summer of 1976
"Guess who I just got tickets for?"
"The Bees Gees?" June snorted into the phone, tossing her tennis ball up in the air with her left and catching it again with her right. She lay sideways on her bed, her torso and legs sprawled out on the mattress and her head hanging off the edge.
The summer heat was merciless, drying out the teens like old fruit. June's curly dark hair stuck to her damp forehead while the mouthpiece of the telephone left a ring of sweat along her cheek, irritating her beyond belief. She could have sworn she saw the wall come alive and melt into the floor. Her chirping clock seemed to mock her with every tick, making her want to rip it off the wall and send it flying into the neighbor's pool.
She shook her head and rubbed at her eyes, finally seeing straight again.
It's just the heat getting to me, she thought to herself.
"No you spaz! Fever-freaking-Buzz is who." June immediately shot up to a sitting position, the sudden movement causing her to choke on her bubblegum. Her conversation with Daphne left her mind in an instant as she attempted to dislodge the foreign object from her throat. "June . . . June are you there?"
Finally she managed to cough out the gum, where it landed she couldn't care less as the words her friend said over the phone processed in her head. "Did you just say that you managed to score tickets to the Fever Buzz?"
"Affirmative!"
Taking a minute to collect herself, she put the phone back to her ear and swallowed the scream crawling up her throat. "You better not be fakin' me out! I swear Daphne, on the man that I'll kill you--"
"Is yer folks home?"
Despite knowing the answer June still peeked out her bedroom door to check. "No, they're outta town till monday."
"Good, Im coming over. Concert's in an hour, and the drive is thirty minutes if we speed."
She couldn't help but roll her eyes at her friend's impulsivity, there was nothing else to expect from Daphne. "What on Earth are we gonna do with all this extra time?"
"Hey smartass!" June could practically see her smile over the phone. "Don't gruel me, okay. I had to peel em' off some sketchy dude like only an hour ago. I could always go with someone who appreciates what I go through."
"You wouldn't dream of it. Come in through the backyard, I don't want the neighbors seeing us leave." With that, June slammed the phone back into the slot and ran into the bathroom.
