Gogol's ability probably comes from his novella 'The Overcoat,' about which the author Dostoevsky once said 'We all come out from Gogol's 'Overcoat.' This possibly could have inspired the nature of his ability. However, there's no official statement.
EDIT 8/11/20: It was confirmed a little while ago that the ability does indeed stem from Gogol's novella The Overcoat. Sorry for not updating this sooner.
