XIX.The Moment I Became A Soldier
Apprehension.
That unyielding fear that something bad or unpleasant is about to happen, overwhelms my gut as I walk away from my family and make my way towards my best friend.
Ford is leaning against the railing outside of the gate that leads us to the plane that will take us to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. The place that we will start the first stage of our new lives as soldiers. He grins at me, just witnessing at what transpired between Bex and I as I told her goodbye.
"Dude, did I just see what I just saw?" Ford widens his eyes at me and points towards where I was just standing before he elbows me with excitement. I shove him off me with a deep chuckle.
"Yeah," I nod my head with a smile and turn around to face not just my family one last time for the next ten weeks, but also the girl who's my whole world.
Bex gives me a warm smile along with a small wave as my mom and Heather wrap their arms around hers. The three most important women in my life stand fifty feet from me and I find myself not wanting to leave.
Damn, I'm going to miss them.
The last couple of days have been the best in my life and I owe it all to the brown haired girl with the gorgeous blue eyes. I never knew being in love and having it returned could be so extraordinary. With every rapid beat of my heart and flutter of butterflies in my stomach, I know without a doubt that I'm truly in love with that girl.
You know the whole, love at first sight or true love bullshit you read in stories or see in the movies? Yeah well, I never believed in that shit before—until now. I'm like a lovesick puppy when it comes to that girl and I'm all for it.
I stare into Bex's blue eyes knowing it'll be tough leaving her and not being able to talk or see each other for so long. Because of that, I decided last night I'm going to write her everyday while I'm gone. I know we won't be allowed to have our cellphones while there and calls will be limited to one per week.
Besides, call me old-fashioned or a new founded hopeless romantic but love letters once a day seems like it'll give me major brownie points from her.
When the intercom goes off, telling us that our plane is now taking passengers, both Ford and I grip our carry-on bags and make our way down the bridge that leads to our plane.
Once we find our seats and shove our bags in the overhead compartment, we both stop to look at one another in silence on who gets the window seat. We shove at each other a few times while wrestling until a flight attendant clears her throat behind us and I shove him towards the window seat, finally giving in.
"You win this time fucker but on our way back home, I claim it," I growl at him and he smiles that goofy-ass Ford Taylor smile.
"Yeah, sure thing brother," he holds up his fist to me and I reluctantly bump it with my own.
The next six hours are hectic for my brain as it's scrambled with thoughts of Bex, boot camp, and what my future holds after today.
Ten weeks Nate, ten weeks. Then you'll be back home momentarily to hold that wonderful girl in your arms.
Fuck I can't wait.
Ford attempts to hold a conversation with me most the time but honestly I couldn't recount what he told me. To me, he merely sounded like the teacher from the old Peanuts cartoons.
