Tragic Backstories and Dad Jokes

Erwin Smith's stony blue eyes scanned the file. The Jaeger girl was right. This would definitely hurt there case. And yet, she was willing to take the fall. Interesting.

His eyes shifted to Levi who was leaning against the wall. The Captain seemed to be lost in his thoughts about the Jaegers'. Then again, he could be trying to distract himself from how dusty the cells had been.

Erwin held out the file. "Levi, what do you think."

Levi's eyes scanned it from left to right before he closed it with one hand. "I think she isn't telling the full truth about their Father and how they acquired their powers. She's holding back."

Erwin nodded swiftly. "Then let's go ask her."

When the two returned to the cells, Akira nearly seemed unresponsive. She was sitting upright with her eyes closed. The back of her head was rested against the wall, scrunching up her dark hair. Her arms limply hung by her sides. Her knees were bent so that her feet were firmly placed on the bed.

It was silent for a moment. Although nothing about her position changed, Akira was the first to speak.

"Tell me honestly, Commander, how likely is it that they will let Eren and I to live?"

Levi spoke up before the Commander had a chance. His voice was level and monotone, just like always. "Ah, I see. Before you were speaking as a solider. Now you speak as a sister, yes?"

"Levi!" Erwin sent a warning glare towards the Captain.

"No no, it's perfectly alright. It's not like he's wrong. Yes, now I do speak as a sister." There was silence for a moment or two. "I don't care about me. Please just do your best to ensure Eren's safety." She has fixed her sitting position so that it was more 'at attention'.

"You can do that yourself Akira." At the Commander's words, she sat up and opened her sea green eyes.

"If we win the court case, you mean."

"Yes, if we win the court case."

Levi let out an annoyed huff. "This isn't what we've come to discuss. What did your Dr. Jaeger do to you?"

Sea green eyes clouded over as she was thrown into her past. "Is Eren still asleep?" The Commander nodded in response. " Alright. I'll tell you. After the fall of Wall Maria, Father found Eren and I in a refugee center."

Flashback:
Akira was knelt by Doctor Jaeger as he cradled his son in his arms.

"Eren, Akira, was your Mother not with you?"

The two children glanced at each other, and the eldest stood up, placing a hand on her Dad's shoulder. "Papa, Mum, she's gone." The mystery man bearing the wings of freedom collapsed to his knees. Akira's brow furrowed slightly in confusion. He looked familiar. But why would a Scout be with her Dad?

Akira gazes back at her Father. A dark look had passed over his face that she had never quite seen before. It scared her.

"Akira, Eren. Avenge your Mother. You must. I know you can. Let's go."

"Wait, where are you going?" Akira turned her head to face the Scout, her eyes betraying her uncertainty.

"Don't follow us."

End flashback:

"For some reason, there was a scout there. I think his name started with a 'K' but I'm not certain. Father lead us into the forest where he pulled out two syringes. He said it was 'essential that Eren and I get injected at the same time.' I'm not sure what they were filled with. I didn't get a good look at the label."

Akira glanced at the well poised needle  that she was told to inject herself with. Her hand was shaking slightly. She glanced up at her Father, tears starting to stroll down her face. "Papa, I ...I don't understand. Why do I have to..."

The Doctor didn't turn to face his daughter. Instead, he was focused on injecting his struggling son. "You won't remember my explanation even if I were to tell you now. Akira, I'm sorry it has come to this, but you need to protect your brother and harness the power of the titans. You need to inject yourself, now!"

"He...he had handed me one needle while he went to inject Eren. I...I think I passed out? When I woke again, Eren and I were next to our steaming Titan forms. Our Father was gone, but judging from the amount of blood left behind , I think you can guess as well as I what had happened. I panicked and knocked Eren out before carrying him back to the refugee center."

There was complete utter silence and Akira's eyes widened when she realized exactly what she had confessed to. "Please don't tell Eren. He doesn't know. I think if he did, it'd break him. S-Sorry. I probably sound like I'm insane."

Commander Erwin's eyes flashed dangerously. "Hello Insane, I'm Commander Erwin."

Levi let out a groan before sending a glare at the girl, as if she had made the joke herself. And Akira? Her jaw had dropped completely out of pure shock.

"Kira, tell me you did not just get the Commander of the Scouts to make a Dad Joke." At the now awake Eren's words, Akira finally brought herself to close her mouth.

The Commander spoke up again. "Go on and tell people. They'll never believe you."
