Ciro, 1925
A young woman, Adalinda, stands at the top of the steps leading into the Ciro museum where her sister works.
I knew that I was getting odd looks from those around me because of what I was wearing. Tight dark brown pants with a gun holster on each thigh and a dagger, the hilt of another dagger was visible from the top over the top of my over-the-knee boots. I had a loose white top with long sleeves covering my tattoos, and when caught in the right light, it looked see-through. My hair was pulled back into a braid showing my long slender neck and a small tattoo behind each of my ears that was Egyptian.
The symbols marked her as a descendant of the royal family.
I took a deep breath before walking into the museum. I looked around as I wandered but didn't stop since I could hear my sister talking to herself. My sister, Evelyn or Evy, was putting books away in order. As I walked into the room, I heard a soft thud and then what could have been other things falling. I was standing on two of the shelves looking at one of the books when a few books fell around me and on my head. I fell to the floor and groaned as my legs got trapped under the shelf.
"Shit, Evy!" I curse loudly, catching her attention.
"Oh, Ada! I'm so sorry!" Evy shouts, her eyes widening as she turns to face me. "I didn't mean to do this; it just happened." She rushes out quickly as she tries lifting the bookcase.
As Evy was distracted, the Curator walked in, looking around in horror. "Look at this!" He shouts. "Sons of the Pharaohs! Give me flies, frogs, locusts, anything but you! Compared to you, the other plagues were a joy." He continues shouting as he looks around and catches sight of me trapped. Evy quickly stands and starts to gather books.
"I'm so sorry it was an accident." She apologizes in a small voice, glancing at me every so often.
"My dear girl, when Ramses destroyed Syria, that was an accident. You are a catastrophe! Why do I put up with you?" The Curator shouts, still angry but starting to sound exasperated and almost talking to himself.
"You, you put up with me because I can read and write ancient Egyptian, decipher hieroglyphics and hieratic. I am the only person in a thousand miles besides my sister who can properly code and catalog this library." Evy states gaining confidence with each of the things she listed that she worked hard on. I smiled, watching her, but it fell as quickly as it appeared when the Curator opened his mouth again.
"Who needs smart women?" He asks but quickly starts again before I can say anything. "I put up with you because your father and mother were our finest patrons, that's why. May Allah rest their souls." He starts out shouting again but slowly gets quiet. He paused, then looked to Evy. "Now straighten up this meshiver." and with that, he stormed out.
I propped myself up to look around the room to see the damage that Evy had done. "Don't listen to him, Evy. He's just a mean old man, but he does care." I say as I try pulling myself free from the shelf, keeping me trapped. We both froze and looked at each other when a loud bang echoed in one of the other rooms. Evy grabs a torch and slowly walks out of the room while I struggle to free myself.
"Evelyn! Evy, get back here!" I shout as Evy walks out of the room, completely ignoring me. I huffed softly and lay back down, giving up on getting free for the time being. After a few minutes, Evy walked back in with Jonathan, our older brother, following behind her. As they walk by me, I swear I can see a hexagon-shaped box in Evy's hands. When they get closer to the Curator's office, I brace my hands on the shelf behind me and push against it trying to pull my legs free. I give up after feeling something slip onto my legs, trapping them farther. I huff and lay my head down on the floor as I close my eyes, hoping my siblings remember me.
