It was easy to lose track of time when all you see is sand. I can hear Evelyn repeatedly scream as we get tossed around by the wind and the sand scratching us. I close my eyes after what feels like forever, and then it feels like I'm falling from the sky before I land in the sand. I groan as I sit up and hear Evelyn as well.
"Get off! Get off me!" Evelyn demands, and I look over to see Beni crawling off of my sister. I stand up, watching Imhotep become whole again and walk toward us. "Oh, God. We're back." Evelyn groans when she looks up and sees Hamnuptra in the distance. We all look up at the sky when the sound of an engine fills the air. "O'Connell." Evelyn grins at the sight of the plane. Imhotep glares up into the sky as his stance widens, and a wall of sand erupts from the dry earth going after the plane. I watch in horror as the sandstorm catches up to the plane and swallows it. "Stop it! You'll kill them!" Evelyn sounds truly panicked as she watches the plane tumble and rolls around.
"That's the idea," Beni tells us with a smirk. Evelyn and I share a look before I start forward. Once I reach Imhotep, I take a deep breath and raise my hands, grabbing his face and turning him to face me as I lean in, kissing him. I can feel his shock before he melts into the kiss, wrapping an arm around my waist while his other hand squeezes my neck. I let out a muffled gasp as he straightened up, breaking the kiss while keeping me pinned to him.
"I love the whole sand wall trick," Beni says as I shake myself from the daze of Imhotep. I push against him, wanting to be let go when that hand that had fallen from my neck is there again, and he squeezes. I freeze and look at him with wide eyes as I debate with attacking him now or waiting.
"I will kill your sister and use you to bring Anck-su-namun back if you fight now." He sneers at me, and I shrink back while looking for Evelyn, standing off to the side, chewing on her lip as she watches.
"Harm her, and I'll drag your cursed soul back to the Duat to wonder forever." I glare at him until he lets me go and walks to Hamnuptra. "Bastard." I snarl at his back before trudging after him with Evelyn right next to me with Beni behind us. We didn't talk until we were back inside the city, and it was mostly Imhotep giving orders.
"Rana, come." He commands as he heads off to the chamber I had found earlier with the dress and armor. Evelyn goes to follow, and Imhotep spins around and blows something in her face. She coughs and sways before leaning against a wall and fighting to stay awake. I hesitate to follow, and I'm treated to the same thing as Evelyn, and then my world is dark.
I wake with a groan, and when I start to move, I feel cold metal pressing against my wrists while chains rattle. I force my eyes open and see I'm in a different chamber. Looking down, I saw that I was no longer in my nightgown but in the dress I had found. Glaring down at the white linen and jewels, I pull on the chains keeping me in place. Groaning draws my attention to the room around me, and I freeze, seeing mummies as they chant and Imhotep reading from the black book. As the chanting reaches a peak, Imhotep comes closer and draws a bronze dagger across my chest, from shoulder to shoulder, and then across the cut on my cheek, opening it up again. A gasp forces itself from my chest when it feels like I'm being forced from my mind. I fight against it as he steps back and smiles before leaving the room while the mummies keep chanting.
"You must fight it, Adalinda." I hear, and when I open my eyes, a woman who looks like me is standing across the room from where I'm chained. She wore a beautiful, full-length gown with gold stitching and a necklace holding the fabric around her neck.
"Oh yes, because fighting this is going to be easy," I grumble sarcastically. Rana sighs and shakes her head at me. The chanting gets louder again, and a white-hot pain burns through me, making me scream. Rana is closer to me when the pain dies down, and my head is pounding.
