The unborn colt.
He hadn't even come into the world, yet he already seemed terrified of everything.
His mother was scared half to death when the truck and trailer pulled up, but she had known she was completely safe. These new strangers were nice, gentle and kind. She had the sense that the little person was best one to trust.
She sensed that the little one was just as easily vulnerable as she was, in that time and place.
Upon arriving, it was like she had been sent her own personal guardian angel, in the shape of a small human form.
There was more space to roam, she finally felt free again. There had only been one problem. She had been as sick as could be.
Looking into it, she had a high fever, that had be taken care of, she was clearly emaciated. She was also, clearly pregnant. She had a bad cause of mud fever, and other small things that were just making its way to her if they hadn't of found her when they did.
She was patient and willing, as long as the little one was standing with her. The small girl, with long, slick black hair was very calming to be around. She had a soothing little voice, and her actions were small, slow and always taken into consideration of what the animal might think of it.
No quick or sudden movement, no forcefully making her stand where she didn't want to. There was absolutely no way they were getting her into the trailer again, to get her to the vet ranch, down the road and around the corner.
Luckily for her, the girls brother was a vet himself. He checked her, made sure she had the right feed, the right medication, overall, the best care you could give a sick pregnant mare.
He has never seen a scared, unwilling and untrusting mare have so much confident in people, in such little time.

About two weeks after she had been there, the small girl had yelled for anyone around to 'Come quickly! She's in labour and I haven't got a clue what to do!'
Her brother rushed in, seeing the mother on her side, seemingly trying her hardest to push this baby out. She looked to be struggling to push.
After calling out instructions to his little sister and the others that had rushed in, the colt had been born.
He was a little, gross, but cute, looking Dun colt. The mother, who they have named Oasis, tiredly stood, checked on her newborn and walked over to her water bucket, and drank a nice, long needed drink.
Ears pricked forward, she noticed the people standing in her stall, looking at the baby fondly. The ears instantly went back, how dare these people stand there, watching her baby with her in there as well. She lunged at them, sending them running out of the stall, but stopping just before exciting, a small voice from the back of the stall say 'whoah'.
She looked back ears forward again, backing up and nickering lightly, as if to say sorry. The small girl walked towards her, looking down, extending her hand slowly to pat the mares neck. Instead of the neck, her hand made contact with her muzzle. Her two brothers and three sisters standing outside stared in awe, as this creature had put her muzzle into this young girls hand without hesitation.
The colt had gotten up by then, had his fill of milk from his mother and had also watched the interaction. When the girl turned to look at the colt, he squealed came forward on wobbly legs, head butted her legs, feeling safe with the girl his mother trusted so dearly.

A man had come to the small, but slowly growing, rescue ranch, asking about a pregnant mare about a month after the colt had been born.
The family had been shocked, asking why. The man responded with, "I have lost my prize breeding mare, about a month or so back, and overheard that this small ranch might have her."
Showing her to him, he seemed pleased and alarmingly overjoyed to see the colt and mother happily wandering around a small, but widely open pasture. He had said "Great, I'll be taking both back to my place immediately."
Put off entirely, the eldest brother, Jackson, had kindly denied him the access to said mare and colt. When asked why not, he replied with a cold, "Because I know who you are, I know why you came here, you will not be getting this horse back. She is a wild mustang, she deserves a happy retirement and no more breeding."
Offended immensely, "Now, listen here boy, that is my horse and you have no right-"
"Actually I have all the right in the world to take your horse. We found her and brought her back here, she was sick starving and in no way shape or form, in any condition to birth that colt. That colt was born two weeks after being here, she was still in no shape to have that horse."
He went on and listed all of the health issues, foot problems and future care that would need to take place, if took the two back. The man huffed, said fine and asked how much they wanted to pay for the two. He had been refused a price, was told he would be getting no money and being arrested.
The police had showed up at the exact same moment. The neighbouring property a little while down the road, had been an undercover hoarder and slaughter house.
It had been on the radar for months, but when they had been notified that this one specific mare had been found, they decided to close in, take over the property and give it to the small rescue ranch to extend.
