"Ah shit." I cursed, watching the GPS on my phone aimlessly try re-routing itself with no signal in these woods.
I thought my roommates were kidding around about leaving me to gander at the pretty view but two minutes later, they vanished and I was stuck with no sense of direction towards where to go. We wanted to have some time off from classes, exercise, get some fresh air, talk to each other some more... but this hadn't really become the bonding experience anyone anticipated it being.
I barely remembered their names the same way I barely remembered the way the trail went. Now I wasn't just some idiot who doesn't know you're supposed to stay in place if you get lost, but I seriously thought they weren't too far off and I could catch up to them. As of right now, I was wrong.
Things seemed to be getting better when I was no longer headed down a small, sloped dirt trail and I could see some sort of cabins amidst the trees. There was a shimmering lake just beyond them too; it made me feel so much better to see a sign of life here, it signified that there were probably people in the area.
I started approaching the cabins and peeking through their windows, seeing them to be, surprisingly, entirely vacant.
It felt eerily quiet after I observed the lack of humanity here. The sunshine, crystalline lake, lush forest, and all made it seem picturesque but there was something very unnerving about it. I felt as though there was a pair of eyes watching me as I roamed around the former campgrounds.
