Chapter Nine

   I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. It was Bunmi. I stretched out my hand and picked up my phone. 
  "Hello" I mumbled sleepily.
  "Chika"she burst into tears.
  I sat up immediately, sleep leaving my eyes. "What happened? "
   "I... It's Funmi,  she's convulsing" she sobbed.  "I don't know what to do, Mum and Dad are not at home and there's no money to take her to the hospital "
    "Hey Bunmi, calm down, nothing is going to happen to Funmi " I said trying to calm her down.  I went to my wardrobe and picked out an old gown.  I pu it on immediately and rushed to brush my teeth.  "I'll tell....  O God my folks are not at home too.  I'll tell James. "
"Wouldn't he mind? " she asked.
"Ah ah. James is not like that na"
I spat out the gooey substance in my mouth and washed my toothbrush.  "I'm coming, just give me ten minutes and alert you neighbors oo! "
   I hung up and dashed out my room.  James' door was locked meaning that he was still asleep.  I knocked.
   "James open the door! " no reply.  I knocked again. "James!  Please there's an emergency,  I need you help "
   I sighed hopefully when I heard  James mumbling incohorent words.
   Few seconds later his door clicked open.  He poked hid head from behind the door,  sleep still evident on his face.
   "What is it again?  James asked looking exasperated.
   "It's  Bunmi,  her sister is convulsing! " I rushed  "Please she needs help."
    James groaned "Doesn't she have parents? "
    "They're not at home.  Please now "  I pleaded.
    "Ohhhh....  When I was enjoying my sleep "
     "James ! " I snapped.
  He seemed to understand that I wasn't joking at all.  He simply closed his door and came out few minutes later dressed in khaki shorts and a black tank top. 
    "So we're driving to her house? " he asked.
    'Before nko? " I replied eyeing him. 
   I went to  Sochi's room and forced her awake.
     "What? "She whined.  "Can't you let me sleep in peace? "
    "If you like wake up late it's  not  my business.  I just wanted to tell you that Bunmi's sister is very sick.  We want to take her to the hospital.  Chris would prepare you for school okay? "
    "Okay, greet Funmi for me" And she went back to sleep.
      James was already in Chris' room giving him instructions.  We met each other in the yard where my father parked hid Honda pilot.  He unlocked the car and we entered immediately.  I called Bunmi to be sure that Funmi  was okay.  She was still panicking and for the first time,  James spoke softly to her.  I was scared of what would happen if we didn't get to the hospital on time. James drove out of the compound with speed.  It got to a point that I told him to slow down because it was risky.  With this our safe  Nigerian road. 
   Their door was open and people's footwear was littered all over the place.  James  drove in and parked near the fence. 
    I didn't wait for him to kill the engine, I jumped out of the car and rushed into the house.
    A woman cradled limp Funmi in her arms.  Two women ran about with onions and an iron spoon.  Some men were standing around and speaking in hushed tones.  Bunmi,  Esther and Ayo we're crying.  Bunmi was actually suffering the most.  Her eyes were red from crying too much.
   When she saw me she screamed and rushed to hug me.  I hugged her back tightly and reassured her that everything would be okay.
      "We need to get to the hospital immediately.  The doctors know what to do.  James will drive us there. "
   "Okay...  Okay...  Thank you" she said.  Her breathing was not even. It was coming out with difficulty.
   
    James Came in shortly. He went to meet Some of the men who were standing by the door. 
    "Chika we need to take this girl to the hospital.  These people don't know what they are doing. " James said after speaking with them.
   "Oya  na" I said and turned to Bunmi who was checking her sister's pulse. "Bunmi we're  taking her to the hospital.  Tell everyone to go  home. " James said quickly taking over.
    Bunmi nodded and bent to carry Funmi from the arms of the women but James stopped her right in time.
    "Don't worry let me take her to the car. " He offered politely.  If we weren't in this scary situation, I would  have asked if something was going on between them.
   Bunmi paused.  She was suprised too but she let him carry Funmi.
  I told Esther to get Ayo prepared for school.  She agreed.  I swear the girl was shaken.  I pitied her.   "Did Bunmi call your mummy and daddy? " I asked. 
   Esther shook her had and began to cry.  "I told her to call them but she refused.  She said she didn't want them to worry "
Typical Bunmi.
    "Chika take care of them.  Am going with Bunmi " James called from  outside the door.
   I nodded in reply.  He left and no sooner than later I heard the car leaving the gate.
   Esther was still standing where she was.  She was looking lost.  I went over to her and hugged her.  She started crying again.
   "Shhhh,  its okay. Funmi is not going to die. Its nothing to be scared about.  Come let's go and bathe you both" I said and led them to the only bathroom they had in their house.
   I took the both of them to school after getting them prepared and explained to their school authority.  They promised to visit Funmi at the hospital.
   I called Mr Richard and told him I'll be coming late. I explained Bunmi's ordeal yo him.  He told me to take the fay off.  I thanked him and went home.

   Chris and Sochi had gone to schoo, so I did the house chores while waiting for James or Bunmi to call.
