"James." Tera whispered to me as we were approaching the gym door.
I nodded. "I know." I told her. Tera was a werewolf. She could sense the emotion of others in the air. But for me, Sage was my best friend. A brother. I could tell that even if he didn't want us to see, he was bothered by something.
When we all got inside, we were met by music and people. A lot of people. I had never been to any of our high school proms, and I never knew that they were this crowded. Maybe this is how all other proms are? Well, crowded or not, it was still alright.
"Okay," said Terry from behind. "I am gonna go find a date. You guys have fun."
"Good luck, amigo." Sage told him.
Terry went off into the crowd. Meanwhile, Kai and Brooke were dancing and having a nice time. Seeing Kai smile like that, it meant the world to me. He rarely smiled that way. And Brooke, well, I think she and my brother, Zane, did the right thing by breaking up. Besides, he went off to college after graduating last year. A long distance relationship wouldn't have been healthy for either of them. Not to mention my brother is terrible with relationships.
It was just Sage, Tera and I. The music was pretty hype and everyone was dancing wildly. Not my taste and certainly not Tera's, we decided to sit this out a little, have some punch and just watch the fun everyone was having. It was nice, really. We liked seeing how happy everyone was.
Well, almost everyone.
A while had passed before everything had gone a little more calmly. The music wasn't slow or fast. It was some classy country music since we were considered "mountain people". It was switched with some pop and some hip hop. During which while everyone was dancing, Terry had popped up out of nowhere at our table and pulled out a chair to sit down.
Tera, Sage and I would talking about people's dresses when he came. "So how's the search going?" I asked.
He smiled and turned his cheek to the side, revealing a red mark. "I might've said the wrong things." He told us.
I couldn't help but laugh. Neither could Sage or Tera. Meanwhile, Kai and Brooke had made their way to the table as well, Kai pulling a chair out and sitting while Brooke had sat on his lap. "It's pretty fun out there." Brooke said.
"Yeah, but it's not my style to dance for so long." Kai said.
"Alright all you love birds," said the DJ. "We've got a very special night for you. Time to grab that special someone and hold em close. Not too close or else that crazy little lady over there will start yelling." He looked over at Mrs. Bradford, the library lady who got me and Tera in trouble last year. She scrunched her face at him, and he laughed. "Now, give it up for a band that came straight from Libby, please welcome Sphinx."
Four guys, a drummer, a lead guitarist, a bass player, and a lead singer holding an acoustic guitar, took the center stage.
The lead singer had long curly hair, the kind that Brian May from Queen had. He walked up gracefully towards the microphone, wearing a stylish suit. "Good evening, fellow students." His voice was young for a guy in his early 30s. It sounded like he took vocal lessons. "I hope everyone is enjoying their night. I won't hold you guys up from dancing with that special someone in your life, so let's just get into the music, shall we?"
He looked back at his band mates with a smile, and nodded his head and mouthed a countdown from 5. When it finally got to 1 they started playing. The lyrics had me confused at first, but then as it progressed I realized the song through the rhythm. I Want to Know What Love Is by Foreigner. I loved this song.
"Oh man, I love this song." Brooke said. "It brings back memories from watching my parents dance to it."
Kai smiled and kissed her head. "C'mon. Let's go recreate that scene."
