Later in the day, Sam was checking his supplies, wanting to be sure that they would be fully packed for the return journey to Shire. Food, check. Clothing, check. Sleeping bags, check. Rope...why isn't there any rope in here? Maybe I could ask Lord Elrond for some. After all, you never know when you're going to get in a situation where you might need a good, dependable rope.
"Packed already?" came a voice from behind him.
"Ah!" Sam yelled, startled because he hadn't realized that Frodo was behind him. "Don't startle me like that, please, Mr. Frodo!"
"Sorry," yawned Frodo sleepily. "I didn't realize you hadn't noticed I was here."
"Uh, no problem. And yeah, I decided to make sure that the provisions Elrond provided us are ready. It's always good to be prepared, especially when you're a demigod, right?"
"I thought you wanted to see the elves, Sam," Frodo said, shoving his hands into his pockets as he went to the railing that overlooked the valley. The sun was sinking down the sky, marking the end of yet another day.
"I do. I mean, I did. But I saw the elves, so we can go 'ome now, right? I mean, we completed the quest. The Ring will be safe in Rivendell. And after runnin' into the Nazgul, I've realized that this quest was way over our 'eads from the start. We got the Ring 'ere, so the League of 'eroes will take care of the rest."
"Yeah," said Frodo, holding out the Ring in the palm of his hand. "We finished our quest. The Ring will be safe here. And I'm ready to go home." Frodo yawned again. "And take a nap."
Sam smiled, although deep inside, Frodo felt worried despite his words. He had a feeling that things wouldn't be that simple, and that leaving the Ring in Rivendell wasn't going to work.
