Heaven, or whatever you wanted to call it, was just like the real world. There were houses, neighbors, and streets. There were even cars and stores, which weren't really necessary. It was just to help people adjust to death. But it was normal. It felt like the pass life. Most people preferred this world over the past one, actually.
But not Wally.
He had Kent Nelson, his wife, and Joan. They were all very close. He had even managed to make some friends while in Heaven. Still, he had never seemed to ease this ever lasting loneliness. Down on earth, he had Dick, his parents, the team, Artemis. He wanted to see them. But he couldn't.
It was actually morbid to think about, since that meant he had to go back to living or his friends had to die. Wally didn't want his friends to die. Plus, it was impossible for him to come back. Especially since he didn't have a body. There was nothing to do but wait for the enviable. And waiting came with so many other questions.
What if they forgot about him? What if Artemis fell in love again and when she died, she didn't want him anymore? That seemed to be the biggest question on his mind. He wanted Artemis to live a long life. He did want her to find love again. He wanted her to have children with someone who would treat her good, because having a family of her own had always been her dream. If this did happen, Wally would be completely out of the picture. When Artemis died and came to this world, she wouldn't want him. She would wait for her other lover to die and live her life with them.
Relationships were one of the things that didn't work the same. If you died with a soulmate back on earth, you still loved them and couldn't love someone else. However, if you were the living soulmate you could move on.
Wally slammed his fist over his alarm lock as it beeped annoyingly. Every morning at eight o' clock, it would ring and disturb the redhead. He hated it with a passion, but that's what it was supposed to do, he guessed.
The ginger rolled onto his back and flung himself into a seated position. First, he rubbed both of his eyes with his fists. Then, he looked at himself in the mirror across from his bed. His blanket was on the floor, like usual. His thick, red hair was messed up and his left pant leg of his Batman pajamas was up past his knee. The speedster smirked at his reflection and gave it two thumbs up, "Looking like a snack, West."
Wally stood up from his bed and stretched his back. He looked down at his night stand, which contained a picture of him, Artemis, and Brucely. It was the one where Artemis had her arms wrapped around him. Brucely was winking and Wally was taking the photo. They all had huge smiles on their face. That was during much happier times.
"Looking beautiful as always, Babe ... Looking like a good boy, Brucely," He whispered to the picture frame. The ginger gave it one last smile before he snapped his fingers to change his clothes.
It took a bit of adjustment to get used to the whole no showers or real clothes system in this world. Since you were a soul, you were always clean and could just snap on clothes. Every science rule he had spent time learning in the real world didn't really apply. Honestly, it was kinda a waste since he had only spent twenty one years down there and he would be spending eternity up here.
So much for college loans.
After Wally was done getting dressed, he walked out of his door and huffed. There was nothing but stairs and platforms. Every morning this frustrated him. Even in death, Kent Nelson loved to live in a tower full of twists in turns.
The redhead shook his head before snapping his fingers. There was a spark of white light that surrounded him before he found himself seated at a kitchen table.
"Wally, you sleep like you're dead," The ginger looked up at his honorary grandmother, Joan. He snorted as he looked at the plate that was already in front of him. On it was toast, bacon, eggs, hash browns, and some slices of banana.
"I am," Wally smirked as he started to dig in, "Right, Nelson?"'
Kent, who was seated at the round table, too, smiled, "Well, I've been dead for a quiet awhile."
Inza, his wife, gently smacked his arm and shook her head, "May we please not joke about death?"
"I guess it's even taboo in limbo," Wally joked.
When Wally first died, Kent and Inza were actually the first people to greet him. Rather quickly, the elderly couple became like a second set of parents to him. Two years later, Joan passed away and the three all arrived to greet her. Joan and Inza had already know each other from the old Justice League days. They happened to be good friends. All four moved into Kent and Inza's home to make things not quite so lonely.
Joan smiled as she swallowed her food, "You know, I checked into the real world yesterday."
"Oh really? How is everything down there?" Inza asked as she took a bite as well.
"The Justice League and the Outsiders are still doing well. Bart is helping Jay move on rather well. He's in the best health I've seen him in awhile. And Wally, your parents adopted a dog! They named him Physic after you," The older woman smiled. Wally smiled too, even though it was fake.
Everyone had the ability to look down into the living world, depending if you lived in the 'good' section. There was a hell or evil section of this world, but that was reserved for serial killers, torturers, rapists, and things of that nature. It wasn't as if Ted Bundy would be walking down the street amongst the clouds.
Anyways, there was this thing called the portal. You would snap yourself there and be brought to the river. If you twirled the water you could look down at the living people you wanted to see. Wally had only gone there once. He had only watched over Dick. Looking down at his parents and Artemis would hurt him too much. Luckily, Dick was doing good in life. He had finally got together with Barbara.
"Are you alright, son?" Kent asked after several long moments of silence. The runner nodded before standing up from his chair.
"Yeah, I just need some air."
"We're dead, Wally. We don't need air," Joan raised a grey brow. The twenty one year old glared at her.
"You know what I mean," Wally snapped his fingers and his plate disappeared. Luckily, food was unlimited in this universe and nothing of it was wasted.
Wally found himself at a park. It looked just like a regular one. There were running paths, a sprinkler, and families playing together on a jungle gym. Truthfully, Wally could have picked a much better place to go. Seeing all the happy families made him painfully jealous. He could only image himself with Artemis and Brucely be his side. Artemis would be holding their baby in her arms. It would be a boy named Wolf West. In his mind, he convinced her to name their son Wolf. And inhis mind, they were happy.
The redhead sighed as he snapped his mind out of his fantasies. That could never happen and he didn't want that to happen. He didn't want Artemis and Brucely to die just so they could be a family. That was selfish. People loved Artemis in the real world. People needed her.
And Wally would wait, even if it took years and Artemis would no longer love him.
A/N: So I came up with this idea at 12:30 on a Monday night. I haven't seen a fanfiction like this before, and it doesn't make sense, but I'm writing it? Anyways, I think this will allow me to be really creative and focus mainly on Spitfire. (Sorry to my Traught fans. I still love Dick and Artemis together. Sorry to my spitfire fans if that disgusts you. Lmao.)
