Saffron's captor clearly decided that they were running out of time too as it was Saffron that delivered Maya and Harry with the nudge they needed in the direction of discovering what the second task would be. All Saffron knew was that she was telling the pair of them to consider taking it underwater, using the fact that Viktor Krum was swimming outside as the reason to try it.
Both Maya and Harry didn't feel as though they were getting anywhere with it so they agreed to try it and of course it led them right to what they needed to find out, as Maya revealed to Saffron, Harry, Hermione and Ron at lunchtime the day after Saffron had suggested it.
"It worked," Maya whispered to them very quietly to ensure that nobody else could hear them. "I put it under the water and it basically revealed what the task is," She clapped Saffron on the back. "That was genius, Saffron, how did you even think of it?"
"I don't know," said Saffron simply, scratching her head still confused herself as to how the thought came to her. "It sort of just came to me,"
"Well, that was just the stroke of luck we needed," Maya told her delightedly. She turned to Harry. "Try it tonight, use the Prefects bathroom the password is 'pine fresh'. I'll let you hear it for yourself and we can talk about what we're going to do, I'm looking for strategies in the library now and this evening so good luck,"
Maya waved at them, positively beaming at what she had discovered that morning and Hermione turned to Saffron, impressed:
"Maya's right, it's impressive that you were even able to find a correlation between Viktor's preparation and how to figure out what the task is in the first place,"
"Or you could have just asked him in the first place and saved us all the hassle," suggested Ron with the bitter tone that was always present in his voice whenever he talked about Viktor.
"I already told you," retorted Hermione impatiently. "Viktor and I don't talk about the tasks, not at all and quite frankly it's not up to him to help everyone else out. It's different with Maya and Harry, of course, but he's going to do right by his school by trying to win,"
"I thought the tournament was about international magical cooperation or whatever it was? Making friends, is it not?" Ron smirked at her.
"You know what I mean," Hermione rolled her eyes frustratedly. The bell rung out for Transfiguration and the four of them got up, making their way towards the classroom."It is obviously about that first and foremost but that doesn't negate the fact that there is also a competition taking place between four students, all of whom would love to win," Hermione paused and turned to Harry, partially to avoid an argument with Ron but also to potentially start one with Harry. "I just wish you would have not lied about having solved the egg already Harry, you could have told us!"
"Well, I panicked, okay?" sighed Harry irritably. "Look there's a lot going on right now, stuff you don't even know about,"
"Then tell us," said Saffron firmly, attempting to give Harry a comforting look.
Harry shook his head. "It doesn't matter. I'm going to work out the egg tonight and we can take it from there, can I please just enjoy or tolerate being a normal student like the rest of you for a bit please?"
Saffron and Hermione exchanged a worried look but agreed. There was no point in burning Harry out as there were still a few days left until the second task, on February twenty-fourth and without knowing what the task was, they already knew that it was going to take a lot for him to get through it successfully, meaning he was going to need every ounce of energy he could muster.
