10. Think of Something
"I'm so hungry. Did you want to eat before we go home?" Mohamed asked her.
Mulki looked at him in surprise. "Sure."
They walked down the street and entered a shop called Aroma Cafe. Outside many customers sat on the patio tables drinking tea and telling stories. Inside the cafe was quiet and only had a few customers. The decor was warm and cozy with many paintings on the walls. Mulki saw a mother with her children sitting on one table and the little girl waved at her. Mulki did not know her but she waved back. Mohamed went to the cashier to place their order while Mulki chose a table. She chose a seat next to a window. She set her book bag and purse on the empty chair next to her. She saw two cars that had gotten in an accident, she watched the female and a male driver argue while the police officer took notes.
Mohamed returned and placed a tray with tea and a basket of sambusas and malawai on the table. "What happened?"
Mulki picked up her steaming tea and blew gently on the liquid. "Car accident."
He took off his book bag and put on the ground then sat across from her, "There are always car accidents on this street. I swear women do not know how to drive."
"What!" Mulki shouted causing several customers to stare at her. "Sorry. What are you trying to say?"
Mohamed smirked, "Women always get in car accidents."
"They do not."
"Yes, they do. Women are always talking on the phone instead of paying attention."
"Why are you blaming the female driver? You did not even see the car accident," Mulki glared at him.
Mohamed smirked, "I have seen enough car accidents to know."
"If you have not seen the car accident than there is no way that you will know whose fault it is." Mulki argued.
He raised his eyebrow, "Sure."
"Yo, President Mohamed!" a group of teens entered the cafe.
It was eight students, four boys and four girls. Mulki recognized them. They were all in the Blue Class. A few of them went to order and the rest pulled more chairs and tables closer so they could sit with them.
The students all exchanged handshakes with Mohamed.
Mohamed nodded towards Mulki. "Everyone this is Mulki."
Then he pointed at each student.
"That is Abdikarim." The boy with a goatee wearing a basketball shirt sat down in the backwards chair.
"That is Zaki." The boy with round cheeks with flashed a welcoming smile while grabbing a sambusa from the basket.
"This is Hawaya." The sophisticated girl wearing a scarf with doe eyes and long eyelashes.
"And Nacima." The cute girl wearing a brown scarf.
Nacima waved at the girl who went to the register. "Ubah! Can you get me a coffee instead of tea with double sugar and cream? Please!"
Ubah narrowed her eyes, "Fine." She turned back to the cashier and her curls swung in the air. "I'm sorry. Can I change my order?"
Mohamed pointed at the girl at the register, "That is Ubah."
Two boys walked towards them carrying trays of food.
"That is Awil." He looked very strong and muscular.
"That is Shukri." The girl with shoulder length brown hair picked up a cup of tea from the tray.
"What about me? Aren't you going to introduce me?" The skinniest boy glared at Mohamed.
Mohamed frowned, "What are you doing here, Omar? How many times do I have to tell you to go away?'
Omar slapped his Mohamed's back good-naturedly, "When did you say that?"
Mohamed glared at him, "Every single day."
The skinny boy laughed, "Really? I should stop ignoring you one of these days. But sometimes you are so boring when you start lecturing me that I stop listening."
Mohamed pretended to stand up and Omar backed away and hide behind Ubah.
"Omar stop playing! I swear if you make me drop this coffee than I will kill you." Ubah growled.
Omar's eyes were wide. "Ubah, you are even more mean than Mohamed. Anyway I am hungry, so I just came here for the food." He helped himself to a handful of malawai.
Ubah frowned, "Omar, you are always eating. I am surprised that you never gain weight."
Abdikarim set down his tea, "Mohamed, did you know that Yasin was jumped today after school?"
"By who?" Mohamed asked.
Hawaya raised her perfect eyebrows, "Who do you think?"
Mohamed sighed, "Banadir Academy?"
Hawaya nodded.
"I am so tired of them." Omar whined.
Awil smirked, "That is because they beat you up last week."
"No, I won that fight."
Zaki almost choked on his sambusa, "Are you kidding me? I know that you got knocked out, but maybe you need to go back to the hospital. You are lucky that we found you and that Naciima made us defend you. Awil wanted to watch. "
Awil looked away.
"What! Awil, how could you? I thought we are boys." Omar whined. "At least the lovely Naciima had mercy on me." He reached out to embrace her.
Naciima gave him a look of disgust. "I just did not want to see a dead body. But now I am changing my mind."
Omar put his head on the table briefly as if he was hurt.
Abdikarim rolled his eyes, "So Prez, what should we do? Seems like every day, students from our school are getting attacked by kids from Banadir Academy."
"First of all, no one should be walking home alone." Mohamed scolded Omar.
Mulki gasped, "Is that why you are walking me home?"
He nodded, "It is not safe for anyone to walk home alone."
Zaki leaned back, "So are just going to wait for them to get tired of bothering us? What kind of plan is that?"
"They will give up eventually," Mohamed said.
Hawaya stared at him in disbelief, "Mohamed, you have to do something. I cannot be worried everyday about walking to and from school. At least when I go out I can control where I go. But not school."
"Hawaya, we will take care of it. Do not worry."
Omar sat up straight, "Yes, Hawaya, I will protect you."
"Shut up Omar." All the guys said at the same time.
"Hawaya, as long as you don't walk home along. Then you will be fine."
"This has been going on all summer. I thought it would stop now that school started, but it has not stopped. You are the school President, so you better think of something."
"We will take care of it."
