(zayn age 16, liam age 17)

since zayn had started hurting himself, it was hard to stop.

for two years now, zayn hadn't been able to stay clean for more than a week. he tried so hard, honestly he did, but the urge to cut was too strong. zayn felt as though the physical pain was the only thing he could control. for the past two years, zayn's father had started being rougher. the occasional hand print on his arm turned into a new bruise or cut every day. some days it was a black eye and others zayn had bruise marks on his neck. of course liam noticed, but he never said anything. liam didn't know why he never said anything or told a teacher, he just felt that zayn would hate him if he did.

zayn had gotten much quieter, even around liam. his grades were dropping and he felt lower than ever.

saturday morning, liam waited on his front porch for zayn to come outside. the two would almost always meet on liam's porch or sit on his porch swing for most of the morning. zayn enjoyed spending his mornings with liam. his father always went into work early on saturdays so he was able to sleep in and then relax outside with liam without his father yelling or calling him names.

however, zayn hadn't come out yet this morning. it was almost eleven and it was starting to worry liam. liam didn't like to push zayn, so he made sure to not seem too engrossed with zayn's safety but he couldn't help but walk across the road to zayn's house once he realized zayn wasn't out.

he knocked three times, loudly. he hoped that maybe zayn was must over sleeping. but within a few seconds of liam knocking, zayn answered the door. he was in a sweater and flannel pajama pants (they were the purple ones that liam had actually outgrown by now) and had dark circles under his eyes and many bruises on his face.

"zee, what happened?" liam asked quietly, stepping inside and shutting the front door behind himself.

"my dad." zayn whispered.

it was the first time zayn had said anything out loud about his father. but liam had already known about it. he knew bruises don't appear suddenly.

liam sat down beside zayn and put his hand on his thigh. "what did he do?"

zayn shrugged lightly, debating whether or not to tell liam. he felt strange saying these things out loud, scared that liam might go and tell someone else.

"he was really upset last night because h-he saw my grades online..or something..and he saw that i only have a passing grade in art a-and he yelled at me." zayn said quietly, taking a deep breath. "he called me gay and worthless and stupid.."

liam sighed, "zayn-"

zayn cut him off, "liam, he hurt me. and i cried and he hurt me more. i hate this! i hate my life!"

liam stared at zayn. he could tell zayn was not only sad, but so angry. angry at the fact that his own father hurt him and called him names.

"why me?" zayn whispered, looking down at his hands, "what did i ever do to deserve this, liam?"

liam shook his head. "nothing. you don't deserve this zay. your father is a despicable human."

zayn made a small sound and leaned into liam's side. he felt so small, so weak for spilling his secrets and for letting his father do this to him.

after a few moments zayn pulled away from liam's embrace and lifted his shirt up. on his torso were purple, yellow, and blue bruises and so, so many cuts scattered across his ribs and stomach. zayn's protruding ribs and hip bones were the least of liam's worries as his eyes scanned over the hundreds of scars and cuts on zayn.

"h-he saw my cuts yesterday. when he attacked me i was changing and he hurt me even more after he saw them." zayn whimpered, "it hurt so bad, i thought i was going to die."

liam bit his lip hard and pulled zayn into him. "zayn, you can't stay here. we need to tell someone."

"liam, i'm so scared." zayn admitted. "it hurts to move and to breathe. i want this to stop, but if we tell someone, i have to go to a home."

"zayn, a home for teenagers is better than here! anything is better than living with him!" liam argued. he didn't understand how zayn put up with this for so long.

"it isn't that simple. i don't want to leave you, liam." zayn told him quietly, looking up at liam.

liam was about to respond, but right then, zayn's father stepped in the door.
