"i fucking hate mrs.johnson" zion yelled slamming his backpack onto the table.

it was currently lunch time and it had been a day for zion. honestly it wasn't too much but he wasn't really used to things not going his way.

"now what?" brandon asked.

"she's a stupid ass teacher who just wants to fail all of us" zion groaned. "she said everyone is failing that class except ryan. she literally just got here, how is she passing?"

"she teaches herself that's why. she's like super fucking smart" austin smiled at the thought of his new friend.

"oh yeah? HEY RYAN" nick laughed as he yelled out to the girl who sat close by with her nose in a book.

ryan rolled her eyes before closing to book and walking over to the forbidden table.

"what now?" she asked.

"umm, what kind of fish are dolphins?" edwin rose his eyebrows in question.

"dolphins aren't fish, they're mammals" ryan corrected.

"you see, smart" austin pointed out.

"what's this all about?" she asked confused.

"zion's failing english" brandon said making the table erupt in laughter.

"shut up doofus"

"you're the one failing english" nick teased.

"yo ry, why don't you help zion?" austin suggested.

"fuck no" the two said at the same time.

"woah that was weird"

"don't be stupid, you need to pass english to graduate" nick pointed out.

it had been a week since ryan had moved to ridge view high school and for some reason zion and her could not get on the right foot.

anytime he said something cocky or rude, ryan snapped back with a quick comeback. it's basically like the we're the same person, but different gender.

"fine, but not at my house" zion gave in.

"pause, i don't remember agreeing to this" ryan lifted her arms in confusion.

"don't worry my parents will pay you" zion rolled his eyes.

"no wonder you're so used to getting what you want when daddy just goes around and pays for it all" ryan scoffed.

"you see, this is why i can't stand her" zion stood up, grabbing his backpack and storming off.

"what's his problem?" ryan asked.

"umm, his dad died in afghan 7 years ago" edwin said.

"fuck" ry whispered to herself before running after zion.

_________

"i don't wanna hear it ryan" zion rolled his eyes as he put his headphones on.

after ryan tried to run after zion at lunch, she couldn't find him. so she asked the boys what his last class was so that she could apologize once school ended.

"i'm trying to be sincere zion" she said, but it was pointless. he couldn't hear her.

she almost gave up. but if you knew any of the andersons, you'd know they don't give up.

ryan reached up and jumped to get the airpod out of his ear.

"bro give me my shit back"

"let me apologize, any decision on tutoring can be made afterward. just let me say sorry for judging you before i knew everything"

"fine, apologize" zion stopped walking.

"i'm sorry i was an asshole. this school has kind of brought that out of me. but it's still not an excuse. i know how hard it is to loose someone"

"no you don't, you still have your mom and dad" zion scoffed.

"yeah, but it'd be better if i had my older brother too" she said, her voice almost cracking.

"afghan too?"

"iraq" ryan corrected.

"i'm sorry"

"yeah me too" ryan faked a smile. "so truce?"

"only if you tutor me. i need my grade up by next month" zion said.

"okay, everyday at 5 after school then" ryan suggested.

"4, i have to be home by 7" zion said.

the two shook hands in agreement. for the first time in a week, the two were finally in middle ground. ryan looked up to find zion's eyes already on her.

the two remained eyes locked until ryan's name was being yelled from across the parking lot.

"i'm coming austin" ryan rolled her eyes before letting go of zion and running to austin's car.

"what was that about?" austin asked when she hopped in.

"we have a truce" ryan smiled. a real smile.
