Night falls and the young man returns home. He finds Xena sitting on the porch, tail wagging, and a muddy limp Silkie hanging in her mouth; it's eyes white and pale like the moon. Grabbing the chook from the dog's mouth, he rushes inside and relief floods his body, for there are no puncture marks. He washes the chook clean and goes back outside. Hesitantly, he sneaks closer to the pipe keeping a look out for Sid. No sign. He throws the chook over and runs inside, bringing Xena with him.
Morning comes and it's the young man's day off. The song of magpies and cockatoos are heard above. Walking towards his car he sees Sid watching him. He asks, half mumbling,
“Hey, mate. I'm heading off to town. Need anything?” “Nah, just thought you would like to know that Amelia passed yesterday.” Sid looks down sorrowfully. The young man didn't know what to say.
He stood. Swallowed.
"Well… She was a good chook.” Sid nods in agreement, the young man hurries to his car and takes off.
