Lights of Winter Part 1

The evening felt alive as Norma strolled through the center of downtown White Pine Bay. Apparently she was the last to know about the Lights of Winter festival. It appeared the whole town was there. Twinkling lights hung from post to post. There were numerous vendors, from hot drinks to local jewelers, all hoping to boost their holiday sales in one night. The air was wrought with energy and smelled of gingerbread and Christmas cheer.

As Norma nudged her way through the crowd, she marveled at the fact that she had never attended this event in the three years she'd lived in this town and what that said about her. Although she had originally intended to get out into the town and be social with the locals, after everything that had occurred, she ended up mostly staying close to home. She hadn't made (or at least kept) a single friend...except Alex.

Normally, in a crowd this large, she would have been instantly annoyed. Between all of the people bumping into her, and all the Christmas lights and music irritating every one of her senses, it was all a bit too much for someone like her.

Although she loved the idea of Christmas, the reality always ended up falling flat. She would do the whole ordeal...decorate the house, buy a big expensive tree, cook an elaborate feast. And most years, she would end up eating alone, or only with Norman. Dylan would be MIA and when Sam was alive, he'd pass out drunk long before dinner.

Admittedly, these last two years had been a bit better, finally having and enjoying both of her children together. Still...something was always missing.

But this year felt different. For the first time, she found herself excited about the holidays. So excited that she didn't mind the children running through the crowd and bumping into her, or the loud noises and annoying music. She even bought one of those gimmicky, ridiculously over priced umbrellas with the LED lights that everyone had.

It was so strange and unfamiliar to her, this feeling of hopefulness. Even with Norman being gone, she looked forward to spending this time with Alex.

She had been thinking about him all day. The memories of their passionate night together ran through her mind again and again like a song stuck on repeat. From the moment their lips touched and she felt his arms tighten around her, desperate to pull her closer to him, he had set her body on fire. He was every bit the lover she'd always imagined him to be.

They were both nervous, but their chemistry was off the charts. He made love to her with the fire of a man who was finally being allowed to have the woman he'd always dreamed of. He made her feel beautiful, sexy...WANTED. He was loving and gentle with her, cherishing her body like it was the world's most valuable treasure. She'd never had that before.

Truthfully, she'd been let down by every other lover she'd ever had. Her first husband John would only last a few minutes before he would roll over and fall asleep, leaving her to often finish the job herself.

Sam started out promising enough but as time went on and his alcoholism grew worse, he became abusive and would often hurt her during sex just to prove his dominance over her. She would usually lay there and pray for it to be over as quickly as possible.

Zack Shelby had no rhythm and no imagination. With him, she was lucky to get her clothes all the way off before he was frantically jabbing inside of her like an overexcited teenager.

But Alex...he took his time, checked with her frequently to make sure she was enjoying herself (she was), and insisted that she climax multiple times before finally finding his release. She'd never been taken care of like that. Ever.

Her eyes scanned the crowd. There were so many people here but she couldn't find the man she was looking for anywhere. Maybe he'd changed his mind and decided not to come. Maybe he was at home waiting for her right now. Maybe he was disappointed in her performance last night and decided to move back to his house.

As her mind raced with a hundred possibilities, she caught a glimpse of a tall, dark haired man dressed sharply in a dark blue suit and black trench coat. He stood speaking with an older couple. Even through his coat, she could see the outline of his strong arms and lean chest. His handsome features looked relaxed and at ease. His eyes sparkled as he smiled and made small talk.

Her heart fluttering, she watched him for a moment, mesmerized by his confidence and flawless ability to charm his constituents. She'd never thought him to be a people person. Then again, there were many things she'd never thought him to be.

Alex shook hands with Lou Davis, the principal of the local middle school and his wife. Although he smiled and chatted casually with them, he felt distracted and anxious. He'd been there for an hour, walking around, hoping that his new wife had changed her mind and decided to attend the festival after all.

After their awkward breakfast encounter and her standoffish behavior, he thought he'd blown it with her. Had he come across too strong? Did she regret making love to him? Shit...maybe I wasn't good at it, he thought to himself in alarm. Maybe she wasn't satisfied.

As for him, she had surpassed every expectation he had. She was by far the sexiest woman he'd ever made love to, without even trying to be. He could still taste her sweet skin on his lips from when he gently kissed her everywhere she would allow...(she declined his request to taste her. He was disappointed to say the least but respected her wishes, refusing to do anything that would make her uncomfortable).

His mind reeled at the memory of her luscious naked body pressed against his and her soft moans in his ear. After last night he knew he was totally ruined for any other woman. He was hers completely.

After a moment of speaking with the principal, he felt a peculiar flutter in his stomach. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up. It was the strangest feeling, like being watched from afar. He turned slightly and stopped.

There she was, standing off to the side of him , looking flawless in a sleek gray coat with fur around the wrists and collar and tall black boots that hugged her shapely calves. She seemed to glow. He couldn't tell if it was her perfect skin or her blond hair hanging around her face that created this allusion...or maybe he was just seeing her again for the first time.

She had been watching him, an unreadable look on her face. Their eyes met and she smiled shyly. Flustered, he turned to the curious couple and hurriedly shook their hands, muttering an excuse, before looking back at her. His heart did somersaults in his chest.

As always with her, he felt like she had an invisible lasso wrapped around him, pulling him towards her. He could never resist the hold she had over him.

Eyes locked, they began drifting slowly towards one another as everything in the background faded away, leaving only the two of them.
