It had been three sunrises since lilyfire's death. Aspenpaw was now following lynxshadow and hawkstorm through the forest. Once they reached the river, they stopped to drink.
"Keep watch for us, please." Lynxshadow asked her apprentice. "We'll be back soon." The two warriors bounded across the stream silently. Aspenpaw sat alone for what felt like moons when Lynxshadow reemerged from the reeds, this time without hawkstorm. "If anyone asks what happened to hawkstorm, tell them that he fell in the gorge while chasing a mouse, and we couldn't find his body, ok?" Aspenpaw gave a small, but noticeable, nod.
"H-how are greyfeather a-and mousetail and the kits doing?" Aspenpaw asked shyly.
"Good, good. Plumkit's been refusing to eat fish, and mousetail has been getting bad bellyaches, but otherwise, they're fine." The two she-cats silently walked back to camp, stopping to hunt quickly. When they returned, lynxshadow stalked into oakstars den.
"Hey! Aspenpaw!" She heard her name being called. "Wanna go annoy skyclan!?" Squirrelpaw asked her.
"B-but...why?" Aspenpaw asked in reply. Squirrelpaw looked confused for a moment.
"Because, y'know, it's well...fun." Squirrelpaw explained.
"Alright let's go then." Aspenpaw said calmly.
"Cool. Hey, adderpaw! Sparrowpaw! Wanna come?" Squirrelpaw called over the two apprentices. "What about you, mudpaw?"
"Sure!" Mudpaw called.
"Yeh, I'll come. What about you?" Adderpaw asked sparrowpaw.
"Why not." Sparrowpaw said calmly.
The five apprentices walked together, laughing and joking around.
"I think he likes you." Sparrowpaw said calmly to Aspenpaw.
"Who? Squirrelpaw?" She asked back.
"Yeh. Your the first one of us he invited." Sparrowpaw explained his theory.
"Nah, I don't think so. It looks like he likes mudpaw." Aspenpaw nodded her head towards the two at the front of the group.
"Y'know I mean like... like like, yeh?" Sparrowpaw asked her sarcastically.
"Yeh, so?"
"Everyone knows a tom can't be in love with a tom, and a she-cat can't love a she-cat." Sparrowpaw explained as if it was obvious.
"What? no-"
"We're here!" Mudpaw announced.
