I wanted to say that it's highly unlikely that I will ever write how a match occurs because I have literally no idea how to do that, and I think it would suck more than this actually does so heh.
And if I do it will be short so your eyes won't suffer, sorry if you expected scenes of them playing but if you want some there's the anime and the manga for that (?) , this is after all a fanfic about Kuroo and thus love, not volley u.u sorry
I moved my camera lens, trying to adjust the focus on the bug I was trying to photograph and balancing the bright light from the sun that would go through the lens.
"Did you die?" I asked as I listened to the 8 bit sound that was similar to the melody of dying.
"Not yet" Kenma answered me from behind, sitting on the bench.
It was Saturday and in some hours Nekoma had a match against Fukurodani, so Kenma and I decided to hang out for a while and ended up going to a shop we used to go when we were kids. We bought some of our favorite snacks, and now here we were, waiting while he played under the shadow of the rooftop of the shop and I crouched in front of the bench, photographing a bug as it ate a leaf.
"Now I died" he said a while later.
I snapped the shot and stood up, taking my camera off of my neck and passing it to him as he gave me the Game boy in exchange, this way I could focus and play giving my best. I sat next to him and smiled starting a new game. 'Man I'm good at this game ' I hyped myself up as I passed a complicated part without receiving a single hit.
"So..." Kenma talked making me listen to him although still paying most of my attention to the game "Are all these pictures of Kuroo for school or just for your own enjoyment" he asked making me have a spasm and die immediately. I looked at him as the death melody sounded and I saw him looking through the pictures of my camera "You can try again" he said referring to the game I lost because of him.
I felt my cheeks incredibly hot and decided that looking at the Game boy casually again would make it less obvious.
"There are also from other players..." I said as a poor excuse.
"Yeah, a 6th part of them are from other players, you're right" he told me, making me feel my cheeks and tip of the ears burn even more.
"I don't love him, if you're thinking that" was the only thing I could say, but he stayed in silence, seeing the rest of the pictures from the camera, letting me know he expected me to keep going "I just..." I said sighing in the end, killing some small enemies "I can't help but like him. I think that with hindsight I might have always liked him" I said starting to feel my heart beating faster because of the anxiety of saying this aloud, and to Kenma. However, all he did was sigh as if he either already knew or was sick of it.
"You both are just idiots" he said making me inevitably look at him not understanding what he meant, although I quickly looked back at the game so I wouldn't die again.
"Why?" I asked.
"Just talk to him once and for all will you?"
I shook my head because he already knew what I thought about it and then let out a moan while leaning my head back as the death melody sounded again.
"So you let Kenma see your pictures but not me?" the voice from who we were waiting made me sit back up again in order to see him "What kind of favoritism is this" Kuroo complained with a tiny smile as he headed towards Kenma in order to see the pictures that I realized where from him.
I quickly snatched my camera from Kenma's hands and replaced it with the Game Boy while squinting my eyes at him, holding the camera close to my chest, making him laugh at my reaction.
"Have you left anything for me?" he asked looking inside the bag of things we bought and finding a bag of chips.
He sat in between us as he munched the scented flavored chips, letting me smell it from where I was although I didn't mind because in reality I liked them quite a lot.
"How far have you reached?" he asked me as he looked how Kenma played and probably his score.
"The third boss" I answered him, making him let out a cocky chuckle.
"I bet I can do better than that" he said, this time being me the one who let out a confident snicker.
"Okay, bet, loser" I said making him smile.
We stayed there under the cool shadow, eating and playing until it was a bit later and they had to head to the match against Fukurodani. Needless to say though, that Kuroo didn't get to surpass me.
I walked with them til Nekoma High were the match was going to be held and even though I was supposed to leave afterwards I ended up being convinced by Shoji to stay. She presented me the two managers from Fukurodani and the four of us stayed there watching the match which was really close to a tie, although in the end it was Fukurodani who ended up winning which made me feel a bit gloomy surprisingly.
Once the match was done the coaches decided to treat the both teams to dinner as it was a practice match. It was then when Shoji and the two Fukurodani's managers which had been really nice to me decided to present me the Fukurodani's players.
"OH OH! So are you that (Y/n) Kuroo talks so much to me about?!" a gray spiked guy with big yellow eyes whose name was Bokuto energetically and loudly said after hearing my name, making my heart stop a bit because of how sudden and loud his words were, and because of what he had actually said.
Kuroo hit his head quite harshly while sweat dropping and looking like if he was cringing.
"She's not" he said seriously although with a closed-eye smile, still looking kind of embarrassed because of his friend "That (Y/n) doesn't live in Tokyo" he added.
At those words my heart continued beating normally again although with an abnormal slight pressure as I saw his expression while saying that. Kuroo still had the same smile from a moment but his eyes made it look like if he was hurting, which made me thought back to the other day when I caught him mumbling my name and he told me it wasn't actually me but another person.
The pressure on my chest felt heavier as I realized this person he was thinking about and had talked to Bokuto about seemed to be really important to him. It now made more sense because he never called me (Y/n), but (L/n), which meant he also had his mind and heart on someone else. Which sucked because I had actually recently realized I had mines on him, I had always had, while he had his on someone that felt about Kuroo like he felt about me: and that was feeling nothing. ' Ah, the irony ' I smiled sadly to myself while I hurt.
"Besides" Kuroo talked again "Don't you see she's too small and a good girl for me?" he said patting my head as if I was a kid, smiling as he knew he was teasing me.
"This good girl has kicked your ass several times on Battletoads" I teased him back, slapping his hand away from my head "So you can kiss my ass"
"No no, good girls don't swear" he smiled, annoying me further.
I stuck my tongue out to him as I pulled my eye down with my finger and knitted my eyebrows together, making him laugh.
