"How much longer?" Chaya whined. Matthew was getting sick of it her complaining."Oh my gods Chaya, have you never hiked before? We're five miles up."
"Ugh we've been climbing for five hours! This is literally the longest-" she tripped and landed on her face, her backpack flying into Matthew's back. He stumbled forward, falling over the edge. Chaya noticed and quickly rushed over.
"Matthew!" She screeched, terrified. She heard a giggle from behind her and turned around. Matthew was floating in front of her very eyes, raising a brow. Her bag was in his right hand, and his blue eyes were full of electricity. "You scared the living daylights out of me! Don't you EVER do that again."
Matthew only laughed and tossed her bag at her. She clumsily caught it and swung it over her shoulder. She rolled her eyes and stomped off. Matthew floated along behind her, making remarks about how nice it felt to be flying.
"Holy Zeus Matthew! Either you stop making me jealous of you flying or you help me out." She stopped in her tracks, turned around, and looked him dead in the eyes. His eyes widened and he quickly picked her up and flew speedily up the mountain. It took about twenty minutes, but it was an improvement from two hours.
She loved it. She could feel the wind blowing through her hair, chilling her even through her thick yellow jacket. She held on tightly to her bag as they flew to the top.
Once they got there, they hesitated. They weren't sure where to look and what to look for. They knew it was a piece of the spell, but what would that look like?
"There has to be a secret compartment or something." Chaya suggested.
"I doubt that. Considering it moves every decade it would make sense if it didn't-"
"Found it!" Chaya said, pointing to an extremely camouflaged lever that was near impossible to spot.
"How did you see that? It's near impossible to see and it doesn't help it's getting dark out."
"I have super good vision in the dark. It's weird."
"Interesting." She was about to pull the lever when Matthew stopped her. "Stop! This is way too easy. Something is sketchy. Wrap my belt around it and pull it from farther away." He took off his belt and handed it to her.
She tied it around the lever and backed up. The lever clicked and a stairwell appeared before them. Arrows shot out of the opening, and Chaya gasped as they landed around them.
They cautiously peeked over the edge. Once they saw it was safe, Chaya went first. Her jacket illuminated the staircase, the afternoon sun shining from the horizon.
What they found at the bottom was utterly disturbing. Spikes lined the floor and ceiling, trapping freshly killed bodies in between. They had gone completely through them, blood dripping from where the spikes met.
One man looked over at them with needy eyes. The questers gasped, rushing over to help.
"What happened?" Chaya asked. Blood ran from the mans mouth.
"Spe-ell." The man squeaked, his eyes glassing over. She looked at him, wondering how he knew about their quest. She looked over at Matthew questioningly.
"How did he know about the spell? Do you think there are others searching for it too?"
"It's a possibility. After all, this spell resurrects people. Who wouldn't want that?"
"True. If these aren't all the people, then we're dealing with a huge group of enemies." There were about eleven dead men, and one woman. That's when they heard crying from behind the spikes.
"Mooooooom..." the small voice cried.
"Oh my gods the woman was a mother! Her kid is on the other side. We have to get over there!"
"Agreed. But the spikes go from the floor to the ceiling. There's no way to get to-" he was cut off when Chaya began squeeze through the metal. Matthew hesitated, but eventually joined her. It was a tight fit, but they managed.
Once on the other side, they noticed a little boy- around the age of four- crying next to one of the spikes. He was holding the woman's bloody hand with his little one. Chaya felt tears roll down her cheeks as she hugged Matthew and buried her head in his chest.
He hugged her, staring at the kid in shock. He couldn't imagine being so little and seeing this happen. He remembered what it felt like to loose a loved one. It had happened to him more than he liked.
He hadn't realized that the little boy had noticed them and began waking towards them. He tugged at Matthew's pants, looking up at him with large, green eyes. He smiled weakly at the boy and let go of Chaya. She looked at the boy and watched Matthew pick him up.
"Hello there. What's your name?" Matthew asked gently, stroking his hair. The boy hesitated, but cautiously responded.
"Evan Dennis." The boy replied shortly.
"Young warrior." Matthew pondered.
"What?" Chaya asked.
"Evan. The name means young warrior. And his last name means wild. Interesting." He said. Chaya wondered how he knew that.
"Evan, who sent you here?" Chaya asked the traumatized boy.
"Warren." He said. Chaya's eyebrows knit it confusion.
"Who's Warren?" Chaya asked.
"Mommy's boss." Chaya and Matthew looked at each other, knowing they weren't the only ones who were looking for the spell. This Warren was also.
"Do you know Warren's last name, Evan?" Matthew asked. Evan nodded.
"Kyrell." Matthew's eyes widened in realization.
"Oh my gods..."
"What is it?"
"That guy who attacked you during capture the flag, that's Warren. Do not ask how I know. I just do." Matthew handed Evan to Chaya and paced the floor. She was stunned.
"Name?" Evan asked, pointing to Chaya. She smiled at him.
"I'm Chaya. That's Mattthew." She pointed to Matthew.
"Chaha." Evan tried to pronounce, poking Chaya's chest. He pointed at Matthew. "Mahew."
"Yes, Chaya and Matthew. Good job!" She congratulated. Evan beamed. She wiped the tear stains off his face and unzipped her jacket and used her shirt to wipe off the blood on his hands.
She sat down and put Evan on her lap. She took off her backpack and opened it. She had packed wet wipes for a little "shower" during the quest. She wiped down the poor kid. He sat still and quiet. Something was unusual about Evan, but she couldn't figure out what.
Meanwhile, Matthew paced the cave. He couldn't believe that he had figured out the identity of the man who attacked Chaya. Warren Kyrell. The name rung a bell, but he couldn't place where he heard it from.
He watched Chaya clean Evan in silence. He hoped that the kid would recover better than he.
