Tommy had learned that morning that one of their workers was killed by, who they believed it to be, Sabini. Amelié wanted the position. She knew it would put her back in the family business and make sure that she give something to Campbell. Even if it was not specifically about Polly, she could lie. She thought it might even toughen her up a bit more.
She waited outside while the interviews were going on. One goofy looking man walks out of the front room and Finn yells next. Amelié stands up quickly and walks to the door. "Amelié? What are you doing here?" Finn asks.
"Applying for a job," she says with a smirk. She walks in the door and shuts it behind her. "Hello gentlemen," she says with a smile, turning to them.
"What are you doing?" Tommy asks, almost irritated.
"You know it's funny, Finn just asked me the same thing. You'd think they would know why I'm here," she laughs, looking at Arthur and John.
They chuckle at her witty comment. "The position's been filled thank you for your time now be on your way," Tommy says through his cigarette, looking down at his papers.
She scoffs, "don't I get a fair chance at the job?"
"We're looking for someone we can hand to the police for a week so we can fill their quotas of getting the filthy illegal gamblers off the street. You will not be one of them, it's too dangerous. Now fuck off," Tommy says, looking up at her.
"Fuck off?" Amelié scoffs again, "you've been telling them that it'll be quick any easy. Why is it so dangerous for me all of the sudden?"
Arthur looks towards Tommy and puts his paper down, "she doesn't have a criminal record, Tommy."
Having her in jail made him nervous, her name could cause an unnecessary problem. Amelié nods with a smile; her head held high. "No Amelié, it's too much of a risk," Tommy says.
"I can't be your secretary anymore since you gave that to a whore. But you don't want me doing any other job. Tell me, why am I in Birmingham again?" she asks, trying to push Tommy's buttons now.
"You know I can't have you handling men's business," he says.
"What I know, Tommy, is that you think I can't handle myself. But I can't show you unless you let me try," she says.
Amelié stands up and walks out. Arthur chuckles and looks at Tommy, "she's a fiery one ain't she, Tom? Just give her the job, she's good with numbers. She'll be useful."
Tommy sighs and puts out his cigarette, "tell Finn to deliver the news to her and we'll let the coppers know."
-
"Name?" the copper asks.
"Amelié Brodeur," she answers.
The cop looks up for a moment, but then back down to his paper, "profession?"
"Business owner of Embroidery Styles Limited."
"You have to tell a lie, so we can arrest you properly," he says.
"Oh... um... umbrella mender," she says, unsure of herself.
