"Sounds absurd to me," Matthew said. As he stood up, he turned around to face me. "Maybe you guys are meant to be?"
I made a look, showing disgust at what he stated. "What the heck, Matt? Don't scare me like that, I don't like being predicted or something."
"I'm just playing around." He snickered as his large, bunny-like, front teeth shone. "C'mon," He said, offering me his hand. Immediately, I took it and got up from the cold dance floor.
We were in the middle of a dance routine, when all of a sudden one of the guys in my team barged in and informed all of us that a clothing factory at Belton Avenue had caught fire. Personally, I wasn't that quite shocked to hear the horrible news since I'd heard rumors about the building not being completely purposed to produce different kinds of clothing, but they said it was also some kind of a dungeon for kidnapped children. Maybe, just maybe, it was karma. I had little to no idea, actually. They was just rumors anyway. Needless to say, I thought their sweaters looked really cool though; I had two of them in my closet.
The practice continued after a brief moment of sharing stories related to the said incident. Out of all the days we spent on practicing, this day, in my opinion, was the most nerve-wrecking one because of the amount of pressure we felt. The dance competition was supposed to be held on December fifteenth, which was three days from now, but they moved it to tomorrow for whatever reason and now we were almost out of breath. The fire news' effect on us had nothing compared to that sudden announcement. I guessed we would have to stay in the dance studio the whole day, practicing nonstop until our legs became numb by the break of dusk.
The other members left early since some of them already had families who were waiting for them in their respective houses—yes, they were older than I was. I decided to stay in the studio for a little more to have a decent amount of extra practice before I went home. Well, only because I wanted to perfect the last parts. Matthew, the youngest of the team, chose to go home with me. I didn't want him to overwork since I knew that he tended to get easily sick, but being the brat he usually was, he insisted. Alright, I agreed, but I won't be willing to afford all his medications once he caught a flu.
It was about ten minutes past eight o'clock when I called this a day. I felt awfully worn out by then, but it also felt good knowing that I'd memorized the dance moves all well. After turning off the lights and arranging some stuff, we both exited the studio together. The night was actually peaceful, though it wasn't as quiet as the other nights. Along the way, quite a lot of vehicles on the road passed by us. It was a peculiar contrast, I must say, with all the beautiful stars twinkling up above the wintry and velvety black night sky; the surroundings, however, were lucid due to the street lights and the cars' headlights, and there were noises that seemed more like a disturbance.
Suddenly, a thought of Jane appeared in my mind. I then felt a weird sensation compressing inside me as I continued to think of her. I sighed, visible cold air came out of my mouth when I did so. Well, tonight was one of those rare nights in LA where it was so cold to this point. No rainfall, just the immense drop of temperature. "What does she offer in my life?" I asked myself a little too loud, catching Matthew's attention.
