Soft whispers and hearty laughs flew past unbothered ears in the middle of a busy Yokohama street. The summer heat crept in every inch of the skin even during a supposedly cool evening. A group of loud high school students entered a diner just across the street, bringing their boisterous laughters along with them, shatering the peaceful silence that eveloped the place just a minute ago.
A man who's occupying the seat near the counter let out a disgruntled sound, signifying his discomfort. He pulled his dark purple beanie to cover up his ears, like it's supposed to block the noise from the side of the room across of him. Seeing that it didn't help at all, he sighed through his frustration and threw a deadly glare towards the direction of the group. They reminded him of a certain group from the past. He just couldn't remember. Or more like, he chose not to.
Before the said youngsters catch his stare that's ready to suck the life right out of them, he averted his gaze to his right, and noticed someone approaching.
"Here's your bill, young sir."
He eyes the amount displayed in front of him before reaching for his wallet of cash and handed the same exact amount. He'd develop this habit of always giving the exact change to cut the interaction short and avoid any unnecessary conversation. However, this night isn't going his way at all as the person who who took his money, who happens to be the owner of the diner, seems to have a different plan.
"You seem to be in a hurry tonight. Have you gotten busier these days?"
He refuses to answer, for he knows he would only be spouting disrespectful words with his sharp tongue, and an innocent old man definitely doesn't deserve that. Instead, he dusted his pants and stood up, leaving the diner without any other word. But before he can fully step outside, his steps halted, as right in front of him is a portrait displayed to be the biggest one among all others hung inside the diner.
He couldn't seem to hear anything, not the owner who struck a conversation, not the loud group of teenagers. Nothing. He felt his chest sting.
"I see you're a little fascinated about this one," he hears the old man chuckle, and from the corner of his eye, he saw him with a big smile facing at the same portrait. He swallowed the lump on his throat and spoke.
"This wasn't here before."
He was never the type to admit things that would make him sound vulnerable, but this night was an exception, because for once, he'd let himself loose, and decided to admit lightly that he has been observing. The old man acknowledged his words.
"It just arrived yesterday. A customer donated it. He said it's one of his most prized possessions. Apparently, it was painted by a famous painter in my time. His name is Yushiro, and he's well known for his work that depicts only an image of a lady named 'Tamayo'. It's the second most beautiful thing I've ever looked at in my life, next to my wife."
The old man lets out a light laugh that tickled the depths of the heart of the young one beside him. It elicited a soft, sad smile on his lips, and a deep look of longing behind his lilac eyes.
"It is beautiful."
Memories flood his sight as his cold fingertips touched the surface of the canvas. It feels grazed, aged throughout the years, yet the beauty of Tamayo depicted on it is timeless. Even after all the years, it never fails to set his heart blazing with love, rage, and distress.
As peaceful as she looked right there, standing under a full grown and blooming cherry blossom tree, wearing her favorite kimono in floral pattern, and a carefree smile he'd never get tired of looking at, he'd never forget the surge of emotions that ate him alive on the process.
He couldn't recall a single night he had gotten a peaceful sleep without a tear-stained face. He would spend all his days surrounded by used and empty canvases, dirty brushes and bottles of paints. He would sit on the floor, and slowly draw her as how he remember her. People would often say his paintings were more like photographs, yet every moment he finishes his work, he would kneel down in front of it and cry until he's sobbing. He would embrace it, like how he recalled embracing her, protecting her with all his life, because he loved her, and he still loves her to death.
"Are you feeling well?"
He heard the old man's call, and that's when he noticed that tears have already been falling from his eyes. Even the group of teenagers were silenced at the scene unfolding in front of them. Shit.
"Yes, I am fine. I will go now."
He turned his back and reached towards the exit, leaving the scene.
Later that night, he found himself on the same space, the floor he had been pouring his emotions for years after he had moved from his previous place, near the Kimetsu Gakuen. In front of him is an empty canvas, and in his hand is a set of worn-out paint brushes. He set them down on the floor and let his fingers touch the surface of the empty canvas. It felt slightly rough, and smells of new packaging. With a soft smile, he reaches for his brush and slowly whips it, tainting the once pure white material with shades of pink, purple, blue, red and all other hues that reminded him of her. And once he had finished, he stared right back at the spitting image in front of him. He forced a smile on his chapped lips, not bothering to wipe away the tears that had started falling down.
"You're looking beautiful as always, Tamayo-sama."
Say, if everything was forgotten,
Would living without crying also be easier?
But I can't do things like that,
So don't show me anything anymore.
*****I know this isn't my best, but I just wanna release everything I feel about Yushiro here :) he's so precious, and he deserves so much. the ending made me feel sad, because it never show a good light in his future, he's just stuck thinking about the woman he loves for the rest of the days. but then I realized, we'll never always get a happy ending.
the song title is Kokoronashi by GUMI (vocaloid) , but for the video, I used Sou's cover because I think it would fit the vibe coz Yushiro is a man.REQUESTS THAT I WILL BE PUBLISHING SOON:
