After a week of living with each other, Taehyung and I had grown closer and closer.
I noticed that he wasn't always a happy-go-lucky character. In fact, he was rather serious most of the time which took me by surprise.
He'd also told me one time that his friends had dubbed him "The Man of Many Faces". I teased him about it frequently.
It was my turn for the bed tonight so I took advantage of it by going to bed earlier.
~~~
The kitchen lighted flicked on underneath the door, waking me.
I turned my head and Taehyung's analog clock on the night stand read 12:27 in bright red number.
Curious, I stumbled out of bed to the kitchen.
Taehyung leaned against the counter with his back to me. His strong back muscles rippled through his thin t-shirt when he moved his arms.
"Everything okay?" I asked.
He jumped and whirled around, phone in hand. "Oh, Y/N It's just you. Did I wake you? I'm sorry," Taehyung told me, clutching his chest.
"No no, it's okay. I'll sleep when I'm dead." Taehyung grimaced painfully, like I had stabbed him.
Yeontan padded over to us, a leash hanging from his jaws.
"Hey, bud. You wanna take a walk right now?" Taehyung sighed while Yeontan yipped cutely, cocking his head. "Fine, I just can't say no to you," Taehyung obliged exasperatingly, bending down to pat his dog's head. "Wanna come along, Y/N?"
"Sure," I agreed hesitantly, shrugging my shoulders.
I had no idea why I had answered that way. I mean, winter had just started, and it was the middle of the night! No one was crazy enough to go outside right now.
Besides Taehyung.
And myself.
I quickly threw on a thick sweatshirt and long, warm socks, then donned my coat.
Opening the front door, a blast of cold air smacked me in the face, making my eyes water and nose run.
A puffed of air left my mouth, shooting out like steam. Streetlights illuminated the sidewalk where we strolled.
I could've cut through the silence with a knife it was so think.
"So..." I started,"How long have you had Yeontan?"
"Hm...about two years. My parents got him for me when he was just a puppy," Taehyung replied, looking at his dog with much adoration.
A/N: #ProudDaddy lmao
"I've always wanted a pet but Jin would never allow it." I laughed.
Taehyung laughed along with me. "Yeah, I can understand that."
More silence.
"Why do you live with your brother?" Taehyung asked. I cringed at the question then sighed, releasing another pillar of breath from my mouth. I thought carefully before I started the story.
"Right before high school my mom was diagnosed with stage-four breast cancer. She'd last at least six months, the doctors had said. She only lasted three weeks. After my mom died, it was like a huge piece of my heart was wrenched out of me. My dad was completely shattered." I looked down, remembering. "Shortly thereafter, he turned to his old bad habits and became an alcoholic."
At this point, Jin had already moved out so it was just my dad and I. I tried to help him best I could but he just pushed me away. He'd hit me sometimes, scratched me, scarred me." My voice cracked. "Until one day Jin just appeared at our doorstep and whisked me away to live with him. I transferred schools my sophomore year. I didn't even get to say good-bye to anyone." My voice betrayed me, making me end my story.
Tae and I were quiet for a bit until he spoke up. "Oh. I'm sorry about your mom. She probably meant a ton to you," Taehyung said softly.
"Yeah, she did," I told him sadly. "But she's in a better place now and so am I." I shivered, wanting to bury the memories of my past once more.
Taehyung's arm slid around my shoulders, instantly warming me. I leaned into his side, savoring this moment.
