Hiccup, in full armor after a trip to the tunnels, was now facing off against the Monstrous Nightmare, another of the dumb superheroes. But touching the Monstrous Nightmare was a challenge as he could burst into flames whenever he liked, and shoot them.
One downside to that was that the Monstrous Nightmare was a bit reckless and a bad shot. So all Hiccup had to do was tire him out.
"Hey, Night Fury," Fishlegs said through the communications device in his ear. "Your phone keeps getting calls. You better wrap this up."
"Who cares about the phone? Just destroy it!"
"It's from your roommate."
"So?"
"So, about being discreet? You've got to pretend you're one of those people who is obsessed with their phone!"
"I'm busy, and I don't care about my roommate!"
"You better start caring if this plan is going to work." Hiccup sighed and lifted his hands.
"I've got business elsewhere," he said, turning his back on the Monstrous Nightmare. "Chew on this for a while." He traced an image in the air and a dragon of sorts took shape. If it didn't kill the superhero first, it would fade. Those figments didn't last long, but they'd occupy the heroes and Hiccup always harbored a hope they'd kill one if he couldn't get close enough.
He sent it after the Monstrous Nightmare and darted away. He gave a shrill whistle and a shadow bore down on him, slowly shrinking until the tiny form of Toothless sat innocently in front of him. He scooped him up and placed him on his shoulder, running back to the tunnels. He needed to pick up a few things.
"I hate you," he snapped as he arrived to snatch up his phone and change his clothes. "I almost had him!"
"There'll be other chances. And it's no fun to kill them if you're in a hurry." Hiccup frowned. "Look. I didn't know your roommate would be so diligent."
"Maybe she's a superhero. All goody two shoes," Ruffnut sneered.
"I highly doubt it. She would have been facing the Night Fury tonight if she was," Fishlegs said, dismissing the notion. Ruffnut snickered. "Now hurry up!"
Hiccup scrambled out, shoving his phone into his pocket. "Alright!" he said. "See you all at the Monstrous Nightmare's funeral!"
"You can't murder him as Hiccup Haddock!" Fishlegs called as he scampered up the stairs.
"I can dream!" Hiccup ran to his apartment and burst in the door. He winced and gripped his side. The Monstrous Nightmare, much as he hated to admit it, had burned him with a surprise attack. It wasn't too bad because of his armor; it could have been worse. If you got burned by the Monstrous Nightmare, you probably got a third degree burn and ended up in the hospital. The hospital was the last place Hiccup wanted to end up.
"There you are! Where have you been?" Astrid said, leaning against the counter in the kitchen.
"Uh, out," Hiccup said. "Honestly, I can take care of myself." He took his phone out of his pocket. "Eight missed calls? Honestly, roommate."
"Sorry," she said, though she didn't sound very sorry. "Where were you really?"
"Talk later. I've got to take care of something." He limped into his room.
"Are you limping?"
"No...."
"Let me see."
"I know first aid." No, he didn't. Not really. Fishlegs did all that, and rarely because no one ever caught the Night Fury by surprise. If they did, it was going to be an unlucky night for both of them.
