A New Beginning

Rey always dreaded the first day of school ever since she was little. She had grown up without parents, so when she was in elementary school, she had no one to make cards for and when she was in middle school, she had no one to come to her science fairs and school plays.  Not that she was ever in school plays. But she was in high school now, a new beginning.

Rey stood in front of the steps that lead a large set of double doors that separated her and the next four years of her life. She took a deep breath and started up the stairs, she reached the top and pushed open the doors.

The hallway was busy and lined with lockers, actual lockers full length ones, nothing like the small cubby holes she had in elementary and middle school. Groups of students bustled down the hallway. Some of them sat with backs against the wall and others leaned against lockers. All seemed to be in deep conversation with their friends. Some of them owned droids that walked or rolled behind them spewing complete nonsense or a pleasant series of beeps.

Rey looked around, the first thing on the extensive checklist she had made the night before was to get her schedule.

"Um hi," she said with a smile to a girl passing by.

"Yes?" The girl said.

"Can you point me in the direction of the administration office?" Rey asked.

The girl laughed, "alright newbie, it's down the hall and to the right."

"Thank you."

The girl popped her gum and walked away.

Rey walked through the hall and easily found the office.

"Hi," said the secretary cheerfully, "can I help you?"

"Yes please," Rey said, "I'm just looking for my schedule."

"Sure thing sweetheart, name please," the secretary said going over to her computer.

"Um Rey," she said.

"Last name?"

"Just Rey," she shifted uncomfortably, she hated when people asked what her last name was. She hated the looks of pity when people realized she had no one.

"Alright love here you are," the secretary gave Rey her schedule. "Just ask if you need anything else.

"Thank you," Rey turned to leave.

A boy ran past the office crashing directly into Rey.

"Oh sorry," the boy said, helping Rey pick things up off the ground.

"It's fine," Rey said shortly looking up at the boy.

He was tall and had messy brown hair.  His round orange and white droid hid behind his legs.

"I'm Poe Dameron," he said, handing Rey her stuff.

"Rey," she said shortly.

"This is BB8," he said referring to his droid. The small round droid rolled curiously up to Rey.

"Hey," she said softly.

The droid beeped and Rey smiled.

"So what's your first class?" Poe asked.

"Orientation," Rey said, "you?"

"Same," Poe said.

"So you're new as well?" Rey asked.

"Yes," Poe said, "so after orientation what do you have?"

Rey looked over her schedule again. She was going to be missing the first period which was foreign languages for orientation.  She didn't mind that much.

"Science," Rey said.

"Me as well," Poe said.

"Maybe we could help each other find the auditorium," Rey said.

"I am in no position to turn down friends," Poe said.

"Let's go then," Rey said.

Poe and Rey walked in silence for a little, both of them watching other students collecting their things until they reached the auditorium. It was crowded but Rey managed to find two seats fairly close to the stage.

"So tell me about yourself," Poe said.

"Like what?" Rey asked.

'"Where ya from?" Poe asked.

"Jakku."

"What's a girl from Jakku doing on Coruscant?"

"Well you can't get much of an education in a dessert."

"Fair enough."

"What about you?" Rey asked.

"Yavin 4," Poe said.

"Haven't heard of it," Rey said.

"I'm sorry, did you say Yavin 4?" The boy sitting next to Rey asked. "Isn't that like an old rebel base?"

"Yeah," Poe replied, "how'd you hear about it?"

"I used to run with the first order kids, they always talked about it," the boy said. "I'm Finn by the way."

"Rey," Rey said shaking Finn's hand, "this is Poe."

"Nice to meet you," Finn said.
