Flamepaw's POV

The dog came crashing out of the undergrowth, all slaverng jaws and snarls. It had russet and black fur, and was absolutely massive. (It's a german shepard btw) It made a beeline for Skypaw, who yowled in terror and used her speed to quickly change directions and sending the dog headfirst into a tree. The dog clambered back onto it's feet, shook it's head and let out a flurry of furious barks. It backed up and turned around - glaring straight at me.

I crouched down, my claws unsheathing as I dug them into the earth. I hissed at the dog, taunting it. Probably not smart, but it did what I wanted it to. The dog growled and leaped at me. I pushed off my hind legs, using my jumping skills to my advantage and landed directly on the brute's back. I dug my claws into it's course fur, as it bucked around, yowling and spinning, trying to unbalance me. Since I was facing it's rear, I couldn't claw it's ears. So I leaned forwards and clamped my jaws around the base of it's tail

The dog screeched in pain, and that's when I heard the caterwauls and hisses of the others, joining in the fight and attacking the front end of the dog. I clawed at it's back with my hind legs, still biting it's tail. Then, it did something I didn't think it was smart enough to do - it dropped to the ground and rolled, crushing me under it's weight. The breath rushed out of me, and I couldn't move. Black spots danced in front of my eyes. I felt a pain in my shoulder, which quickly grew and spread throughout my body.

I heard the terrified yowls of my best friend, and the furious screeches of Lionblaze and Dovewing. After what seemed like seasons, the dog rolled off me and pelted away, whimpering. I didn't move. My chest heaved as I gasped for breath, but no oxygen came. Blackness pressed down on my mind, and I wanted to give in and let it sweep me away.

Faintly, I could hear the sounds of my panicked Clanmates, but it sounded far away in the mountains. "Flamepaw! Can you hear me? Please tell me you're alright. Please. I can't lose you." I vaguely recognized Skypaw's voice. "Skypaw, run back to camp and fetch Jayfeather and Leafpool. Get them here as soon as possible." I think that was Lionblaze, then everything faded into nothingness.

Skypaw's POV

I did as Lionblaze said and turned tail. I ran as fast as I could back to camp. The trees blurred as I passed them, the forest turning into a blur of greens, greys and browns. I barged through the bramble entrance and raced to the medicine cat den.

"Jayfeather! Leafpool! Come quick! Please!" I yowled, drawing stares of astonishment and worry from the other cats. Squirrelflight stepped in front of me. "Skypaw, what's wrong?" I skidded to a stop, working the earth nervously between my paws. "We, we were training and there was this this dog. Flamepaw jumped on it's back but it rolled over and suffocated her and she's not awake and I don't know what to do!" My voice became a wail at the end. Shocked murmurs rippled throughout the Clan.

Leafpool came out of the warriors den. "Where is she?" She demanded. "The training hollow." I replied. She nodded then turned and ran out of the hollow. Some cat placed their tail on my shoulder, causing me to jump. I turned to see Brightheart gazing at me, memories and sympathy flashing through her gaze. "Jayfeather is out collecting herbs. Cloudtail has gone to fetch him. But I can get you something for the shock." She meowed.

I shook my head. "No, I need to go back. She's my best friend, she's like my sister. I need to be with her." Squirrelflight hesitated, then nodded. "I'll go with you."

It felt like several seasons before Squirrelflight and I arrived back at the training hollow, when really it had only been several heartbeats. I stopped by Flamepaw, who was still in the same position, taking ragged breaths. Her shoulder was at an awkward angle, even as Leafpool bent over her.

"Will she be ok?" I asked anxiously. Leafpool sighed. "She's broken her shoulder, and the dog seems to have cracked a few of her ribs. But even that wouldn't explain why she's having so much trouble breathing, unless one of her lungs has collapsed."

Alarm ran through me. "Is that possible?" My voice was low in despair. "It is, but it must've been one impressive dog. And it also depends on how long it was lying on top of her." She directed that part to Lionblaze and Dovewing.

"The beast was massive. Easily bigger than a fox. It rolled on top of her and stayed there for several heartbeats before we managed to chase it off. She hasn't moved since." Dovewing answered. Worry filled Leafpool's eyes, not doing anything to calm me down.

I buried my muzzle in Flamepaw's fur. "Please please get through this. I can't live without you. You're my rock, my best friend. I need you Flamepaw." I knew that Flamepaw hated sappy heart and feelings stuff but I needed to say it. It was all true.

My best friend drew a shuddering breath, before exhaling. After that she took a couple smalls ones, before her chest stopped rising and I could no longer hear her breathing.
