"Where are you going?" I rolled my eyes at the voice. I knew exactly who it was.
I turned around and he was standing in the door frame. He didn't have a shirt on, his hair was damp, and his sweats hung low on his body. He was clearly showing off, trying to make me nervous.
"Why do you care?" I smiled a fake toothy grin.
"I don't" he pushed his blonde hair back with his hand. I could play in his hair all day if he let me, it looked so soft. It's one of his best qualities.
"I'm going to meet Mateo" I said this to see how he'd react. He seemed indifferent and kind of bored.
"Don't come home too late" he walked closer to me.
"Or what?" I tested.
"You wanna find out?" He looked down into my eyes. Nope. I wasn't doing this again.
"Excuse me" I pushed past him.
"Have fun" he called after me.
I said my to my mom and Sarah who were making cupcakes for Claire's bake sale while she sat on the couch watching tv.
I took an Uber to his families restaurant, I knew they closed early today and he mentioned that he would be alone, so I figured I could help him out and we could go do something after.
When I got out the uber, I walked over to the restaurant and looked through the glass door. It was empty and the chairs were flipped up on the table. I saw Mateo in the back wearing a waiters uniform while he flipped the rest of the chairs up. I waved from the window trying to catch his eye but he didn't see me.
He turned his back like he was talking to someone, she came out a few seconds later and sat on the counter. At this point I was quiet and had stopped waving. He walked over and caressed her face. No, this wasn't happening. It's nothing it's just a touch. That's not cheating. I tried to justify his actions until I saw him lean into her and kiss her passionately. Her light brown waves flowed while they kissed. The saddest part was how happy he looked. He looked like he genuinely liked her.
I banged on the door with all my might to get his attention. His eyes widened, he had been caught. He walked over to the door but I had already started walking away. I heard him jogging after me.
"Honey, please let's talk about this" he begged.
"I aint got shit to say to you" I cursed back, continuing walking.
"I'm sorry, it didn't mean anything!" He yelled after me.
"Don't talk to me ever again." I screamed. I wouldn't let him see this, but my eyes began to water and tears fell. My mascara was definitely smeared all over my face.
"That's How it is now? Ok whatever. Don't expect me to come chasing after you again." That was the last time we spoke. I walked and walked, just crying. I wondered how many times he had kissed that girl while we were dating. I thought about if he liked her more than me.
The girl was so beautiful. She had pale white skin and from what I could see light eyes. Her light brown hair was long and flowy. The part that made me the saddest was that she was prettier than me. Than I could ever be. I knew it. He probably did too.
I walked home, well, to the Callahans, sobbing. I couldn't stop. Tears just kept flowing and flowing. It wasn't even about Mateo at this point. All the sadness in me just bursted out.
I was a few blocks away when I started to calm down. My makeup was definitely scary and my hair was covered in tears. I just wanted to hug my mom.
I heard a car beeping behind me, I wasn't sure if they were honking at me or not, but I sped up. I didn't turn to look at the car but I kept walking.
"Hey! Honey!" Did they know my name or was I just getting cat called?
I turned back and see a familiar blue Jeep. The eyes in the drivers seat pierced through me. Xaviers glare was unmistakable, Why did he look so appealing when I knew he was an asshole?
"Want a ride?" He yelled out. I sniffled my way over to the passenger seat and climbed in.
"So how'd it go?" He asks with a foolish grin on his face, clearly amused. I couldn't take it. I started sobbing again.
He looked confused for a second. He kept looking between me and the road. He pulled some napkins out if the glove compartment and handed them to me. I started to calm down and just looked out the window.
"Listen I'm sorry, ok, I didn't mean to be a dick." I didn't respond.
"What happened?" He asked again.
"He was with another girl, I watched them make out before he noticed I was standing at the door." I said in one breath.
"Jeez, what an asshole" I nodded. He gave me a genuine smile, one of those half smiles that people do when they feel bad for you.
"She was hot, way prettier than me" I said thinking out loud.
"Not possible" he mumbled to himself under his breath.
"Huh?" I snapped my head in his direction.
"You're hearing things" he said quickly.
"So where were you?" I asked, trying to make conversation.
"Um, I was picking up takeout for dinner." He pointed to the back seat that was full of Chinese food bags.
"Chinese? Your mom hates Chinese" I said to him laughing.
"Yeah her and dad went out of town for the week." He said plainly.
"Wait if my mom is home why not have her make you guys something?" I asked.
"She seemed tired and I didn't want her to have to cook, plus you know we eat like a football team." He laughed at the last bit.
We talked a bit more, but he turned on the radio we listened to some music.
I guess he could be kinda sweet some times. I wish he showed this side more often.
