Catherine handed both children Jane's gifts, Edward went to open it but was stopped by a hand.
"Edward wait,"
"Why?"
"This is the last gift Mum will ever give us, so bear that in mind, "
"Okay, "
Catherine nodded at the pair of them to open the gifts. Edward ripped off the paper quickly.
"Katherine, aren't you going to open it?" Anne added.
"In a minute, Catherine can I speak with you upstairs?"
"Yes of course, " Catherine led and the young girl followed.
"It's our first Christmas without mum, and I'm finding it really really hard," Katherine admitted with tears rolling down her face.
"Me too love, but she would want us to be happy, would she?"
"Just the fact I know I will never open another gift from her again... I can't bring myself to do it."  She began crying again. "What about... your present?" Seeing and hearing Katherine cry reduced Catherine to tears.
"No, not yet, same reason as you,"
"Did anyone else... get one?"
"No, I knew she always pre-bought yours and Edward's presents like two months in advance for a reason like this but not mine, " The pair of them looked down. "Hey, shall we open them together?" Catherine got up and Kitty followed, without saying a word.

Both girls sat on the floor of Jane's room with their presents in front of them. The room filled with silence until Katherine spoke.
"That's a nice photo of the two of you, when was that taken?" Katherine pointed at a picture of selfie Jane had taken with Catherine with the London eye in the background which had been displayed in a golden frame of the desk.
"Around 2015, why?"
"You look no different. Question, you never said how long you two had actually been together, how long was it?"
"Around 4 years,"
"How many! You said you'd been going out for a few months!"
"A few months, x 10,"
"So when that picture was taken, you were together?"
"Yep and it was our first date, one of the reasons that's my favourite photo, and your mother looks beautiful,"
They stared at each other and then at the identical presents in front of them.

"Are you ready?" Catherine asked.
"As ready as I'll ever be..."
They simultaneously ripped the top of the presents.

"Oh my goodness..." They said in sync.
