"Nancy." I said as I grabbed her arm. "I need to go the bathroom."
She looked at owen and jonathan. "You guys get popcorn?"
"Yeah Gene want to share a drink?" Owen called after us. "I can grab two straws."
"Nope thank you though." I was busy practically bulldozing through a crowd instead of giving my date attention. Which in my defense , was not my choice. What Carol or Tommy saw us and it spread around school? Knowing Billy he wouldn't take it well. Nothing I couldn't explain, but I still didn't want to deal with the drama.
"Okay we ae here" Nancy said as she turned to the sink in the bathroom. "Now what is your deal."
"What is Owen doing here?" I hissed
Nancy rolled her eyes. "Oh come on I thought it would be fun."
"A heads up would have been nice... I would of-" I looked at myself in the mirror. I didn't look like I was on a passionate date... but I put more effort into my look. "Not been so..."
"I don't understand I thought you liked him. You told me you would let him leave hickeys on you."
"A while ago as a joke... and shortly after I found out ally and Billy were ... so ... close"
Nancy folded her arms and sighed. "So that's what this is about. Billy."
I didn't say anything for a moment. I wanted to pick what I said carefully. "I just want to know if we are all on the same page here. I am not interested in him, does he think this is a date."
It was Nancy's turn not to speak. "He ... kind of does"
"Nancy" I went through my bag and found my fathers old cigarette case. Thankful there was a roach in there. "You know I am not in to him."
"Well... you like him... you didn't like Ricky at first." She watched me as I took a smoke and looked around the bathroom, checking to see if anyone was around. I didn't care though. "At the very least this guy makes you laugh, and Steve likes-"
"Oh god you guys didn't team up to do this did you?" I said as I coughed.
"He just... he may have said something in passing."
"Of course he did." I muttered as I took another pull. "Look, I know what I want, I don't need someone thinking they need to guide me to it."
"What does it matter if you do give this guy a chance. Billy is still clearly with Ally, whats the harm in having your own distraction."
I smiled to myself. This felt like an argument I was having with myself every times I pushed Owen away. "I just ... I know what I want. Its not him."
"Fine he isn't your prince charming but whats the harm of dating him."
I took a breath. "Because I don't want to spend a year with him and realize that all I did was waist time."
Nancy was quiet again. She knew I wasn't throwing Steve in her face but I had to explain why I had no interest. "Fine... but we are here aren't we? Lets just enjoy it. Just for tonight" She gave me one of her doe eyed pouts which soon widened into a sly smile. "Also worse comes to worse you use it as a way to get steve off your back when he is too far down the 'Fuck Billy' Train."
I smiled. "Fine... but I got to grab a phone. And next time you decide to set me up, warning or don't."
"Yes! I am so excited." She said as she went to the mirror. "You know how much he likes you. At the very least it's a night out to bolster your confidence."
I nodded. I had to agree, even when I was with ricky I would hang out with other guys, knowing full well they wanted more from me. I didn't give it to them but I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the attention. I put out the joint and turned on my heel. "See you out there."
