Song of the chapter: Hypnotic by Zella Day

DELILAH was bored.
Extremely bored. No one had come into the cafe and she was very bored.
She leaned against the counter, pushing random buttons on the cash register in hopes of entertaining herself. Perhaps she got too invested in the activity because she jumped as someone slammed their hand down on the counter with money. She looked up in horror only to realize it was a customer.
Under closer inspection however, she had come to put the familiar features together to make out a particular boy.
Jackson.
She felt like running away because it was in that moment she knew that she was blushing red again. Why did she keep doing that around him?
"Hi," he slowly started as he watched her with curious eyes.
She awkwardly smiled, praying that she didn't have strawberry seeds in her teeth from when she ate some during her break.
"Hi," she squeaked out in response.
He furrowed his eyebrows, his eyes zeroing in on her mouth.
Oh god. She definitely had strawberry seeds stuck in her teeth.
"Do I have stuff in my teeth?" she worryingly asked him, praying he wouldn't make fun of her for it.
"No I was just staring at your lips," he nonchalantly mentioned. A smirk quickly overtook the innocent expression on his face. "They look incredibly inviting."
She blushed again, ducking her head down and pressing more random buttons on the cash register.
He cocked his head to the side, studying her every feature.
"Beautiful," he mumbled to himself as he studied the way her hair fell down her shoulders. How her cheekbones sat. How her eyes drooped. Everything about her.
"Hmm?" she sounded out. She heard what he said, but refused to believe he was saying it about her. She was probably hallucinating.
She shook her head to try and clear her mind. He watched her in amusement. "Um sorry," she mumbled, "I think I'm hearing things."
She laughed awkwardly, letting her eyes stray from his face and at anything else she could possibly look at.
"No you weren't," he corrected her. "You heard right."
Her eyes widened and she bit her lip awkwardly, "Oh."
He leaned forward against the counter, bringing his face closer to her own. Her eyes widened more.
"I think you're beyond beautiful," Jackson whispered to her. He brought his hand up and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.
Oh god. Her cheeks were forever stained red. That was a fact.
"Thank you," she breathlessly responded, her voice barely making itself known.
He watched her again. She was so cute. It was endearing to watch her be so nervous and clumsy.
"Am I allowed to ask you out?" he curiously questioned.
She raised her head in alarm and stopped breathing. That didn't seem like something he should do. Especially to her.
"Uh.... I don't think that's a good idea," she quietly responded. She was sad inside, but she knew Jackson couldn't possibly want her.
That was just something she could dream of. But dreams weren't real. They never came true. At least for her.
"And why not?" he challenged, raising an eyebrow wanting her to respond with a good reason.
She felt like cowering under his gaze. It was so intense. He was so cute.
"You can ask someone else out," she offered him with a shrug.
He shook his head in denial, "But I'm asking you."
She bit her lip again.
Should she really say yes? What if he was just playing with her? Last time she went on a date was with a guy who was just playing around with his friends. He never actually showed up to the date though so she wasn't sure if she could count it as a date.
Furthermore, her first date.
Jackson seemed adamant and Delilah decided that if he was playing around with her, then so be it. She would just keep Adelaide close by when it was time for her to cry over him standing her up.
She took a deep breath, not wanting to cry.
"Okay," she finally mustered the courage to say.
She felt her heart stop beat as Jackson gave her a full fledged smile. He had such a beautiful smile that she couldn't help but smile back. She felt her heart flutter, but the back of her mind taunted her about things that could go wrong. So her smile dimmed slightly as she continued to admire his. It really was a beautiful smile.
So why was he wasting it on her?
