During the Holocaust there were many things that enabled these men, women, and children to keep their spirtts up. To keep their spirits up some people drew pictures or wrote small letters to family or friends with scraps of paper. According to the passage "Holocaust Writings: How Does the Spirit Triumph" it states, "In a letter to a friend, Etty Hillesum wrote 'A human being is a remarkable thing.' At that moment Etty knew she would soon be put to death." While some people were in concentration camps or ghettos they kept their spirits alive by admiring the little things like the small gestures that people did for each other. The poem "Love" states "She does not say 'I love you' with hugs and kisses but her love fills my plate and I gobble it up." During the Holocaust many people were put to death but many others stayed positive throughout it all.
