Book 2 Chapter 20

HQ

Ryan wasn't kidding about the calls. As soon as he finished with one another was waiting. "Yes Commander Cracknell, We'll be expecting you. Yes, Sir, I assure you Pepepski has room. Fine Sir. we'll see you soon. Goodbye, Sir." Roger hung up and put his begging eyes on. "Please tell me I've got time to have a few sips of hot coffee."

Ryan nodded and passed him the cup he'd filled. Roger smiled. "We've got some coming from the Navy. Families they want to relocate. Their manpower is lower than ours. They're having trouble manning their ships and they still have dead ones in the water. They're pulling in the families and men. The shipyards and naval bases are taking a hit from storms. If the other countries in the world weren't just as bad or worse than us we'd be wide open to attack."

Roger grimaced. "Okay, next call. "Hello, Is this Ryley?" "No sir this is Colonel Malone at HQ in Black Wolf. What can I do for you today?" "Where's Ryley? We told him he'd have to come back if we had more orphans!" Roger pulled the phone from his ear and wiggled a finger in his ear from the volume of the caller. "Ryley was evacuated to Pepepski. I already introduced myself and I'd appreciate it if you'd tell me your name." The man snorted "I'm Wendel Errington, and I run things in Hillsboro! We got orphans that need to go to Pepepski! We sure as hell can't afford to feed them!"

'Ahh, just the man I want to kick the ass off for not sending the last group with an escort.' Roger thought and smiled evilly "Well Errington, I run all things in Black Wolf, Army, and civilian. We'll be happy to send an armed escort to get the children." Wendal sputtered "Whoa hold on there Colonel. No need to call out the soldiers. We have our own bunch over here but they're too busy to run some brats over there. We're talking about a bunch of orphans after all." Roger decided to test the waters. "Well since they're too busy to do their job correctly since no one is supposed to send survivors especially orphans out on dangerous roads without an armed escort, We'll be more than happy to supply one."

"May I presume the children will be ready to go tomorrow morning?" "Umm Uhh yes, we can have them ready to go by then." "Excellent we will be sending the escort tomorrow morning. By the way, could you tell me who's in charge over there?" "His name is Major Bloggs. Now I didn't mean to get anybody in trouble. He's doing a stand-up job here and we need him and his men helping us." "I intend to find out who is responsible for this problem Mr. Errington. It's by luck alone that the first group made it through to us. I won't have that happening again. In the future, armed escorts will be provided either by Major Bloggs men or mine. I want to make that perfectly clear Mr. Eddington."

"Now you hold on there! I give the orders here and you can't tell me what to do! Hillsboro is mine! If you want the brats you can come and get them! I ain't bothering the soldiers about no damn orphans! I need them guarding my town, not running useless errands! You got that Mr. Big Colonel! You mind your business and I'll mind mine." The call disconnected with a slam. Roger hung up the phone. "Ryan I need..." Ryan stood up. "One call to Major Bloggs coming up. Major General Klystes from the Airforce is holding for you on number 3."

Roger smiled picked up the handset and pressed 3. " Major General Klystes, how are you today and what can I do for you." Ryan got an instant response from the Army stationed in Hillsboro. " Hillsboro HQ, Private Decker, how can I help you." "Private Decker this is Private Jenkins from Black Wolf, My Colonel wants to speak to your Major ASAP." "Sure thing, hang on a second while I get him on the line." It was a short wait. "Hey, Roger what's your ass all fired up about now?" "Sorry, sir this is his aide Private Jenkins. I have to ask you to hold for a moment the Colonel is on with a general but it sounds like they're finishing up just now."
