Ethan
The restaurant is busy, as I have made no reservation, we were told it was a half an hour wait for the next free table for two. I turned towards Mia to see if she was happy to sit and have a drink while we waited for the table to become available, to which she smiled and nodded.
“We’ll be over by the bar; my name is Ethan.”
“Perfect, thank you, Ethan. I will call you over as soon as the table is ready.”
I took Mia’s hand and made the short walk over to the bar. “Mia, there’s a table free in the corner. Do you want to go and grab it, and I’ll bring the drinks over?”
Again, just a smile and a nod in return. We had hardly spoken in the drive to the restaurant. You could quite easily have cut the tension in the car with a blunt knife; it was that evident, and I know it’s because of me and how I acted yesterday in the office. But I need to win her over; I can’t ruin this with her.
Collecting our drinks from the bar, I casually walk over to the seat now occupied by Mia. “One Espresso Martini?” I place the glass in front of her, and she whispers a thank you as I take the seat opposite her.
“Where have you been all day?” She asks, still clearly not in the mood to clear the massive elephant in the room.
“I had to run to court this morning. I wasn’t expecting to be there all day, but the case I’m on is a lot more complicated than I first assumed it would be.”
“Fair enough. By the way, I’ve penciled you in for a meeting in the morning to discuss last month's accounts. I just need your sign off on them before I can submit them to the finance department.”
“No problem, I will be in the office first thing tomorrow so we can get them out of the way. You’re in school tomorrow afternoon, right?”
She nods her head as she takes the first sip of her drink. “I am. Well, remembered.”
I shrug my shoulders. “What can I say? I know my staff members.”
She responds with a slight smile, and the awkwardness was back again now that the previous conversation had finished.
I can’t take this anymore; I have to attempt to squash this. “Look, Mia.”
“Not here, Ethan. Please.” She looks around at the people around us, clearly not wanting to discuss our sex life in public.
“Where then? I can’t sit in silence with you over dinner. This is hanging over us like a bad smell, and I need to know we’re okay?” I plead with her, gazing into her eyes, begging for some sort of forgiveness.
