Jeongin's POV (the next day)
Yeji hasn't answered my text in a while now and I was beginning to fret a tiny bit. Yeji was never the type to leave you on read or anything, she would always text/call you back as soon as possible, so her not replying made me raise an eyebrow.
It was now Sunday which was the day I had planned to take Yeji to her favorite Ice cream shop just down the road from our school. There was something that I needed to tell her for a long time now but I was always reluctant for the thought that she might distance herself from me once I told her so I never did. And so I thought today would be a great day to do so because we've known each other for years now and friends shouldn't keep secrets from each other no matter how injurious the secret may be.
I made my way down to her house as it was only five minutes away from mine. I stood irresolute outside they're front porch not knowing whether to ring the doorbell or to knock. Then it occurred to me that Ms Hwang was possibly at work, she usually worked from 11:00am to 5:25pm on the weekends. I took a step back from they're front door, deciding that there was no point and that I wasn't ready to tell Yeji what I needed to. Just as I was about to open the gate, I heard a creak coming from behind me, I knew it was the front door. I turned around briefly simply to see Ms Hwang staring back at me. She had a very distraught look on her face from what I could make out, she pulled on my arm and quickly ushered me inside the house. I nearly lost my footing and would have tripped over the barrier by the door way.
She sat me down by the dinning table, asked me if I wanted to eat or drink anything, I then politely declined. Her voice sounded a bit hoarse almost like she had been crying, I didn't dare to ask though. After a swift pause of fraught silence she than demand on what brought me here? I didn't know what to answer with, firstly she was the one who dragged me here. I was going to leave if she didn't do so. But of course I couldn't answer with that. "I-I was just looking for Yeji, she hasn't texted me in a whole day now" I stuttered back. Ms Hwang looked unsettled by my statement. This time there was an extended moment of silence before she broke out into tears. I was stunned by her reaction. "Ms Hwang are you okay? Is there something wrong, did something happen? I pleaded with her to tell me. I then placed my right hand on her shoulder trying to comfort her. After a few seconds she replied with something but I didn't seem to catch what she said because she was sobbing. " sorry what was that?"
"Ye-Yeji is missing" she wailed out. Color drained from my face and I could feel my stomach was in knots just from her saying those words."Is-Is...that true!? I exclaimed. She then precisely nodded her head, I leaned back in disbelief. I started to pace up and down the room in the thought that everything she said was a lie. I bawled out Yeji's name out loud, knowing for a fact she would answer back but when she didn't I ran upstairs in distress. Before I could get too the top stairs Ms Hwang stopped me and said "I've already checked everywhere, I've asked everyone in our neighborhood and they to haven't seen her!" I was lost in my thoughts, Just the thought of Yeji being out there somewhere by herself made me scared for her. I told Ms Hwang to drive to the police station whiles I tried calling Yeji. Before I even finished my sentence she stated the words "no!"
" no?" I answered but why? I asked.
Next she told me that "Yeji probably just went somewhere and will come back later...that's all". At this point I was beginning to become sceptical about Ms Hwang. Wasn't she the same lady that was sobbing about her missing niece? and now all of the sudden she's not so worried anymore. Where's the logic in that? "Are you sure?" I asked, "Yes" she announced whiles unlocking door. I was giving her an unsure glare. She then started shoving me out her house now as if to get rid of me. Once I was out the door way she slammed the door right in front of my face. I looked up to Yeji's room to see if I could see her but her curtains were closed.I didn't know where to start. I couldn't waste time, I either had to go to the mediocre police station and file a report or find out myself. Since I actually knew things about Yeji that most people didn't. I had an advantage.
