Esme's Point of View
"Hello? " I answered and heard a little rumbling. It was Zachary's number, a number that hadn't called my phone for over a year. "Hello Zack, is that you?" I questioned.
"Is this Esme?" The mysterious voice asked
"Well yes it is. Zachary?"
"No, it's his brother Micheal, I graduated last year?" Why on earth would Micheal, be calling me? And why would he be using Zack's phone?
"Yeah, I remember. What can I do for you?" I ask casually.
"Something happened. Zack's in the hospital. You're listed as his emergency contact before me and before our parents. Do you think you'd be able to come see him?" See him? Is he out of his mind? He hates me!
"Micheal, aren't friends anymore. We haven't spoken in over a year." I say, feeling the pain and memories rush back to me.
"Please Esme, I'm begging you. He won't tell us anything. Maybe he'll talk to you. I'll come pick you up if you want. Just tell me where." I never thought Micheal would ever care so much about his brother. Unless things have dramatically changed over the past year. Zack used to say that his family treated him like trash, it was one of the many things that we had in common.
"Okay fine I'll come. You'll have to come get me cause it'll take far too long for me to get their if I take the bus. You can pick me up at the mall." I said settling for his offer to pick me up.
"You don't trust me enough to tell me where you live so I can come get you?" He snarled.
"Goddamit Micheal, you really are a jerk. 550 Sundale Drive. I'll be ready in 10 minutes." "I'll be there in 5" he spat back. I heard him chuckle before I pressed the end button on my phone.
What to wear, what to wear? It has to be appropriate because this will be my first impression on Zack's parents but it has to be cute too. Hmm, yoga pants & a sweater with heels. Sounds good. And just like he said, there he was 5 minutes later parked infront of my house. Micheal Hernandez. He was the biggest, good looking jerk of his year. He was actually sweet in the halls but after the things Zachary had told me about him, I hated him. We've never spoken but every part of him bothered me. And now here he is sitting in his blue, 2 door, Mercedes Benze with his hair pushed back and music blasting.
I never take 10 minutes to get dressed especially when there's somewhere I need to be. I'm not one of those girls who needs to put on foundation then power and eyeliner then mascara. I grabbbed my purse and my phone and flew up the stairs from the basement. I grabbed the keys from the hook and locked the door before walking towards the car. When he sees me, a genuine smile develops on his face. "Hey!" he greets me as I open the door and settle in my seat.
"Hey" I said as I put on my seatbelt.
Half of the ride there was pure silence except for the music, which wasn't as loud as before. We got to a red light and something urged me to say something. "I'm sorry I never introduced myself. I'm Esmerelda Salinas."
He looked over and forced a smile "Micheal Hernandez as you might know, but you can call me Mike. I'd seen you around with my brother and his girlfriend alot. How come you guys aren't still friends, if you don't mind me asking?" And so the torture down memory lane begins. Dammit. Well I do mind you asking. The light turns green and he eases his foot off the breaks and onto the gas.
"Long story. I'm sure he would prefer if it stayed untold. But what I can tell you is I screwed up our friendship, not him." Part of me wants to break down and cry at the thought of Zack but the other part of me wants to stay strong.
